I think I've now sorted it for good

Replaced entire exhaust system as it broke off between the cat and the intermediate pipe yesterday, had to drive 10 miles with the loudest car I've heard  Was embarrassingly loud

So while I was doing car work I thought I'd clean up the main earth points (gearbox/starter motor/coil/battery). When I went to undo the gearbox earth I noticed the big bolt holding the gearbox on was loose  Hence making a sh!t earthing point. So I took all the earths off and gave them a good clean with a wire brush. Logged into vagcom, cleared the coolant temp sensor code and now I'm praying to the man up above that the car is sorted and it was that gearbox earth all along. Lets hope and pray people! Starter motor seems to turn faster/more lively now so I do think it was that bad earth causing al the troubles!

Seems to have cured it now
Haven't had any more issues with idle so just gotta keep an eye on fuel economy as it was drinking petrol like nothing!

Re: Khare's problem thread - Front wheel bearing and brakes!
Well today's new problem is....

Right front wheel bearing very loose and brakes are sh!t!

Right front wheel has lots of play on the bearing. Need to swap the hubs over with the 16v ones that have new bearings on it, which leads up to my brakes problem. the 280s are shot, both the pads and the discs so I need to stick the 288 calipers and carriers on which have almost new discs and pads on them. Lucky for me the hubs, discs and pads will cure the wheel bearing and sh!t brake problems. Unlucky for me, I need new front brake hoses as they are a different fitment to the 8v ones! I'll probably get some braided hoses.

Also a potential problem is the speed sensor which is possibly on it's way out, I need to investigate it.

Work needed done soon is rewiring of the front ABS cables as one of them is peeled to the wires and the other was crushed and ripped off when it came loose and got caught under the wheel.
And engine mounts too, front and rear engine mount especially need replacing, and I'll do the gearbox one too while I'm at it. Front mount will probably be replaced with a solid mount (if mk2 and mk3 mounts are the same, I'm not paying almost £100 for a vibratechnics mount!)

Recently replaced front coolant flange as it was leaking, but I think it may still be leaking as I had to top up twice now, not a lot, but enough to cause me concern. I think the reason for topping up though was the fact that engine had cooled without me topping up after swapping the flange. I topped up with engine hot, then topped up again with the engine hot. We shall see!

Engine oil is also leaking somewhere, I think it may be from the sump, around the gearbox area. So new sump gasket is required at some point soon.

HOPEFULLY, after all that...car should be good for another week of trouble free motoring

  • Hello, my name is John and I'm a dub addict.
before you do anything see if the hub nut is loose. if it is there will be play in the hub, which in turn means your discs flop about and push your caliper piston back in and make the brakes rubbish. its a 30mm nut on a mk2, assume same on mk3, but iirc the 5 stud models use a 12 point nut rather than 6.  if you're lucky nut is loose and doing it up tight will fix the problem, use a breaker bar and jump up ndown on it a bit to nip up the nut. I call this torque figure is 1 metric rj ubertorque :P

I did think it might b loose but not sure. I'll try and find a socket big enough and a breaker bar to do it up with!

You can get a solid front mount for about £45 from ebay or the same person from ClubGTI. They are differant to the Mk2 ones.

Ah right, well I'll make another thread closer to the time so I can balance the pros and cons of an OEM and solid so I can choose

sorted the wobbly front wheel! RJ was spot on, was a loose hub nut! Tightened it nicely now.

Yesterday I did outer n/s CV boot and top mounts, no more knocking front the top mounts, however, there was a wierd metallic noise coming from the front somewhere, not 100% sure where when moving. It was intermittent, sometimes it would do it, others not. Got the car up on stands and checked over for anything rubbing and saw nothing, but I did move the brake dust shield further away as it was pretty close. It sounded A LOT like when my abs sensor was rubbing on the abs ring though. However the n/s is in good nick and the o/s hasn't got an abs sensor at the moment.
Anyway not doing the noise any more now, so it may have been just a stone or something caught somewhere. We shall see
