Here we go caught it on my compact camera

Turn it up loud you'll get the idea.

Stops when placed in gear, returns after raising my foot of the clutch.

It's noisy. I wonder what Steve30 thinks.
Maybe as you release the clutch the engine revs drop slightly and the rattle you hear is the engine and not the gearbox?
Similar thing happened with a diesel manual Focus belonging to a friend of mine. Drove him nuts so he changed the car.
I listened to mine just now, there is no increase or decrease in overall noise both inside or outside when the clutch is or is not engaged. Inside, it is more or less silent and totally vibration free when idling.

They claim that is a normal characteristic of the car and is not a fault. Pah yer right.

It only stops when placed in gear which you can't see me doing in the vid (the sort of clunking noise).  Its not so noticable on the outside of the car.

Sometime if you drop the clutch in neutral it can dip/raise the revs slightly.

VW looked at the car at 700 miles on the clock, I reported it at 300 and its not got 3250ish miles and the noise hasn't that I can tell got any worse - yet!!!

Now at least people have got a comparison.  The third letter (if required) will be accompanied by a cd with the video on it.

Hum im not sure. The whir could simply be the engagemnt of the gearbox as your now driving the gearbox coxs/shafts with the clutch up. Its noisier than i would expect for the age but im not sure if its excessive. Its not as loud or frequency i would say was for sure the clutch release barring.
I would get them to check the gearbox oil level as you never know it maybe at minimum.

It can be louder than that video and more metallic sounding.
