Good afternoon Ladies  & Gents,

I wouldn't say I’m new to the forum but this is my first Topic, so hello

I currently have a 2007 GTI (200ps) which has developed a reoccurring problem, the engine cover mounts are somehow becoming damaged on a regular basis.

They have been changed on three occasions in the past few months and still the engine cover is coming out of place and damaging the oil cap, filler neck/rocker cover which I have had to replace once as the engine cover somehow broke the filler neck clean off.

To sum it all up, the mount nearest the oil cap has on three occasions bent backwards so much that the plug which the engine cover is inserted on to is pointing to the rear of the engine bay. Each time this mount comes off the engine cover then rests on the oil cap and filler neck which is all plastic and easily broken. With this mount damaged it is then only a matter of time before the other four either come loose or are also damaged.

The stealers are trying their best to do me over claiming that it isn't a warranty issue and that somebody must be deliberately forcing the engine cover incorrectly damaging the mount. They are yet to diagnose the problem and have already done me out of £400+ for new mounts a new rocker cover and a new engine cover, non of which have cured the problem as it is happening again for the forth time in four months. I will go into much more details when I get a chance but first I would like to see if any other Mk5 GTI have had similar problems?

The vehicle isn’t abused and has just covered 17000 miles

Thanks

Craig

Are you 100% sure that the 4 x rubber grommet things are still in place, as these are prone to falling out when removing the cover?

Hi, yes the 4 grommets have all been accounted for on each occasion, either attached to the engine cover as they should be or sometimes attached to the mount if they have sheered off from the cover.

Have you got a broken engine mount as I've never come across this problem before?

Forgive me for being the one to ask, but are you sure its not been in a bump?

I cant understand why something that shouldn't be able to move keeps braking. if something wasnt quite straight like a engine mounting or someting it could poss explain the problem?

I asked the Stealer if they had checked the engine mounts as the only assumption i have come to is that under strain the engine has too much play and is forcing the cover against the underside of the bonnet. they said they checked the engine mounts and they were fine.

The vehcile hasn't being in any accidents.

same thing happened to mine and smashed the fuel pump regulator twice and broke the oil neck once, i replaced all the mounts rubbers and cover and it happened again so just took the cover off!

I wish I could do the same but I intend on keeping the car standard and I also want to get to the bottom of it as i have paid a small fortune over a problem the dealer still can't solve on a car that is still under warranty.

I also was wondering about the engine mounts...to be moving that savagely to sheer the cover and mounts seems very odd. If the car is 2007 when is it out ofwarranty? Not saying that they don't want to do until out of timescale but it may be worth taking to a different stealers? That way it's still warranty check. But ask I they will diagnose for free unless it is stillbroken in which case they should diagnose for free. This is not normal and if it is search for as many other examples and label it as design flaw that VW should have an answer for to stop a recall from occuring

lastly good luck.

Cheers,

Car isn't out of warranty until the end of November this year, as it currently stands the engine cover is resting against the oil cap again so I will be paying them a visit this week to see if they have heard anything back from VW on the report they sent off.

As for other examples, apart from the other one mentioned in this thread I have only come across one other but non have an explanation as to the cause
