Something has just come to mind, of the four times the engine cover has come out of place it has only actually come off its mounts twice. On the past two occasions it hasn't detached but has moved backwards by about 1cm max, just enough to cause it to touch the oil filler neck.

Now here is my problem, the original engine cover was filthy with dirty marks all over the top of the silver section. The new engine cover is only a couple of months old but again has some very obvious dirt marks on it, these dirt marks are only on the silver top of the cover at its highest points and are clearly a result of the cover touching the black cloth on the underside of the bonnet.

My question is this, on a car that has no problems (As VW claim) is there any reason why the engine cover should be coming into contact with the underside of the bonnet in any circumstances if it is still fully attached to all of it's mounts?

No marks on mine.. And the cover should not touch the cloth material on the inside of the bonnet, as surely that means there is no room around it to allow air to flow and keep it cool? Anyone else thinking this?

Mine is slightly dirty, but not what id calss as exsessive for 43k  :undecided:

you'd be able to tell if the engine cover is touching in the sound deadening pad cos it will rub through fairly easly and tear the cloth.

dTEA is right air has to flow around the engine

The old engine cove was filthy at around 15k, the new one has covered around 1K and is on its way to filthy. There are clearly visible wear marks on the cloth and a tear that was caused by the old cover.

Took it in to them this morning and as always they can't answer my questions as to why the cover is touching the underside of the bonnet, only stating i am making assumptions  Same old bull

They are going to refit new mounts again and test drive it over a three day period to see if it comes out of place so we'll see what happens.

Mine is pretty clean at 48k miles.  Deffinately shouldn't be rubbing - maybe worth trying a different dealer?  You're not making any unreasonable assumptions - in fact I think you've nailed it.  Is the bonnet sitting properly with regards to the wings / front grille?  Or is it the engine thats sitting too high ...

I said a couple of posts ago...take it to a different dealer...not local either and just 'bob' in.  Other option is email VW racing or the like and ask their opinion of the bonnet touching scenario and then feed that back to a more sympathetic dealer. It's under warranty so VW UK will help as well...google their number.
