comparing the 170 DSG golf against the 170 S-Tronic audi. No idea why the golf is slower.

But comparing the petrol models the golf gti is a heck of a lot slower at 6.9 compared to 5.6 for the A3 Quattro. In fairness though the A3 squeezes a lot more power from the engine.

Pom, with 4WD [Quattro] it's possible to get more power down on the tarmac without overworking the TCS or spinning the wheels; that's why the Golf R can handle 275PS, which is produced from the same 2.0TSI engine that is in the GTI with 210PS. It's also why the A3 Quattro can be given more horses.
 

golf r and rocco r have got the engine from the s3/ed30 (2.0tfsi byd) - very different from the 2.0tsi in the mk6 gti - comes with stronger internals and a bigger k04  turbo etc

nothing to do with been 4wd as the rocco r/ed30 are fwd and have got the same engine

of course you will get quicker 0-60 times with the quattro/haldex but once rolling (30-70) the FWD will be faster due to less transmission loss and extra weight associated with the AWD system

Pom - you don't say what you were ordering - i'm assuming a GTi

GT TDI 170 DSG.

its not so surprising they couldnt deliver on time, they dont make one.
Its either a 140bhp GT or GTD.

I had a 170 A3 DSG and loved it, good choice..

just vw cost cutting - as whats the point in developing a new engine when you have one already which works perfectly well on the s3/ed30 and can handle 350-400hp without problems

interestingly VWR grenaded two 2.0tsi engines in their mk6 gti race cars so now use the 2.0tfsi byd engine...

its just vw catering for the modern gti owner - middle class accountant types who buy the golf because it makes them feel less of a geek and to impress the neighbours but winces at having to put super unleaded in because they read somewhere in the Sunday times that it gave no peformance benefit on a Citroen Picasso...

hence they developed the 2.0tsi

Hold on, did someone say the A3 is faster than the GTI ? I aint reading 3 pages again just to confirm.
