Newbie needing HELP mk4 gt tdi engine problem

 Hi all,this is my first post so go easy on me !! Iv just won a very slightly bumped mk4 gt tdi on a salvage web site, had it delivered to me and on starting it up it runs very smokey ( stinks of diesel )and runs a bit rough ( if it was a petrol i would say it had a plug off ) any advise will be appreciated thanks in advance.

Get someone with VAG-COM to read it, or get a reader yourself.

stick your head under the bonnet and look for any obvious signs of disconnected pipes

If its running rough at startup it could be the coolant temperature sensor which is about £20 form the dealers and 2 minutes to fit

But as Mr DH says get a fault code reader and see if anything is lurking........

Diamond hell im guessing vag-com is a fault reader yeh ! the problem there is i cant move the car at the mo front end is off it, do you know any one in the teeside area that could round and do it for me ?? Rhyso, it runs rough all the time not just on start up ! and also the rad got it in the bump so lost water could this be the problem with the water temp ??

if it runs rough all the time then its one of the following

boost leak
faulty MAF

what's the problem with the water temperature?    I only suggested the coolant temp sensor as you mentioned its smokey on startup

What colour is the smoke on startup / when running??  If its thick and black you've got a boost leak

The smoke is white and it has a strong smell of diesel ! just been out checked for any wires or pipes off, all ok, filled it with water ran it till warm and the roughness settled down but still kicking white smoke out !!!

White smoke is not good - has it lost any oil at all??

No loss of oil so why does it stink of diesel ? when i say white it could be bluey white !

bluey white means its burning oil 

white is unburnt diesel

 we will go with white unburnt diesel cos it stinks of it !!! what could be problem ??
