HELP!!! Chattering from exhaust system at certain revs

My car has developed a chattering noise, like a rattle infact from the rear of the car which seems to be coming from the exhaust system. I've had it at the garage and there trying to say it's normal but I'm not convinced. It happens between 2200 and 3000 revs in any gear. It doesn't do it when stationary and revving. The mechanic said it might be something to do with the waste gate. He got this info from the VW bullitin board so it must be a past reported problem. Can anyone confirm this sound should be there or not before I raise hell. It is very obvious to a trained ear and any feedback would be appreciated

No chattering sound from mine.

Can you hear it from outside the car if someone were to hold the revs at the point it does it? Could be a loose heat shield or a baffle gone in the exhaust system resonating at those revs. Best to do some further investigation yourself to see if you can pinpoint it

Ive had two mark 6 GTIs and they have both done this. It also happens on the Scirocco and if you go on their forums it's a common complaint. If it's any consolation this noise got quieter as the miles went on and could hardly hear it after 4k when I rejected the car (different issue).

The dealer's demo car made the same noise....

So according to VW it's okay for a premium-priced car to rattle due to their inadequate design and testing. Yet it warrants a change in production to prevent it in future? Load of b*ll*cks - they should provide a fix for it.

Thanks guys. Again you have been helpful as always. The noise is slightly annoying. Not so much in the first 4 gears coz before you know it your above the 3000 revs when it happens but once you get through them and into 5th and 6th you are in this rev bracket where it is almost a constant noise when acceleratig through a corner say or braking and pulling back up to speed etc. Seems very strange to be a recognised problem but do nothing about it to fix

I vaguely noticed this sound today while having a spirited drive. My car is 4 days old with 500km on the clock. Sound like a heat shield is loost but have read about the waste gate vibrating and this seems to be "normal". I get it when accelerating between 2000-3000 rpm.

I noticed something similar today too. It sounded like a resonance of something a baffle maybe but reading this i wonder. but mine should have had the design change

What I do have is a rattle when my engine is idling. It sounds like a diesel. Is this normal?
