wash and dry the car, then put your and inside a thin polythene sandwich bag and with the bag tight to your fingertip run the fingertip across the paint surface - you'll feel anything on top of the paint.

If you can't feel the spots then they are in the paint film itself.

If you can feel something then try a clay bar, (or in the absence of one a piece of bluetak) - use some diluted shampoo as a lubricant between the clay and the paint. rub back and forth a few times with light pressure. If the marks have gone then you stand a chance of getting them removed through claying the whole car.  If not then straight back to the dealer for them to rectify.

The golf is a nightmare for picking up tar spots, but if you have these spots on the roof to the same extent as the tailgate and rear bumper then its unlikely to be tar.

As above, check the spots are raised, then try a small section with a clay bar.  If it works, then speak to your dealer.  Arrange to have the car put to a professional valeter and done properly - and for VW to pik up the bill.  Don't let any VW monkeys near your car with a sponge... as they'll probably have a stanley knife blade trying to scrape the marks off!

If the lumps are under the paint, take it to a paint shop and get it confirmed, then reject the car.  Make sure VW keep you on the road until a replacement car arrives.
Golf R... 3 door, DSG, Leather, Reflex Silver, Black 19" Talladega Wheels, ACC, Parking Sensors, RNS510 with Dynaudio, Reverse Camera, Luxury Pack, Cruise Control & Fiscon Bluetooth.

exact same problem with my white GTI. When i took it to VW I got the standard response of 'where have you parked it..'

BTW, they didn't do anything. After about 3 months they dissappeared, which i can only presume was through weekly washes. Plus numerous efforts with tar remover - but this was due to all the newly filled pot holes from over the winter.

Check if they're on the glass as well. Autoglym glass cleaner solved that problem. Mine was particular bad on the rear of the car - none actually on the front.

Dont deal with the salesmen or warranty girl, you need to find out who is the brand manager and talk to him.

I rejected a red GTI with paint probs but at first didn't get anywhere with the fleet manager so i called VW UK and they told me to speak to the brand manager (they also told me it had 2 repairs done to it before i picked it up!)

Stick to your guns, tell them the problem needs to be sorted or you will reject the car (they soon take notice, believe me) and they also dont like it when you say you've spoke to VW UK.

Good luck, hope it get's sorted.

Cheers for all the comments / info guys - appreciated. Checked my neighbours new polo in white and his paintwork is perfect! Not going to take any nonsense from the dealer - more than happy to speak to VW UK if they can't resolve. Already mentioned to the dealer that ill reject car so they have been warned.  Ive been reasonable to date so they have an opportunity to rectify and put thinks right - had dealings with VW UK on my previous GTI - they did surprise me and take interest and resolve issue with the dealer.

I think ill get in touch with a detailing firm who can give me some independent advise - use this to counter any nonsense the warranty girl tries to come up with. Forgot to mention she said to me "don't read anything that is on the forums - its all rubbish! Ive worked in warranty for years...." ####whole!

Car is spot on other wise so just hoping this can get resolved quickly.

Let you know how it develops

Cheers
