I shall see..........and i KNOW RWD is USELESS in winter/snow!!!!!!!! IF i take the BM path.....winter tyres will be purchased this year......

Winter wheels / tyres are a must.  My missus' BMW 120i Cabro never moved for about 3 weeks over Christmas as it was totally stuck in our car park!
The 120i is absolutely guttless - so definately don't go for one of them!  I kindly had a shot of a Smart For Two for a couple of months while the owner was out of the country, and it could almost take the 120i in a straight line!!!

As Snoopy said - test drive them back to back and see which one you prefer.  Everyone has different tastes - so its the only way you'll be able to tell.

James, my point is he is comparing the 130 against a GTI - both hatches not coupe's. Im guessing he wants the practicality of a hatchback

yeah its hatchback practicality im after PLUS a great fun drive when the mood takes......the 130 WILL become a cult hero i feel especially as its a 6 cylinder, 3 litre engine in a RWD car of that size....and it CAN return 35+ mpg when driven sensibly......But the GTIs are no slouches either and have more interior space and comfort.....OH i DONT KNOW!!!!!!!!! test drive, test drive!!!!!! lol.

so, Rich, go the whole hog  -  135i  -  that said, the brilliance of BMW here is the 123d  -  sub 7 seconds to 60 and that MPG! the 123d is the top of the diesel 1 series and the 135i is the top of the petrol 1's  -  I reckon that if you were to get the 130i, you'd be saying 'I should have.....' but drive the cars!!!

Go the whole hog, because that is what you will be buying.

that BM forum bit is interesting!!!!!! they WILL say have a 1 series though!!!!!! ive owned a mk5 GTI AND own a 120d at present...and i WILL say that obviously i miss the revvy petrol of the VW....but it DIDNT get its power down EVEN in the dry as well as the RWD 120d does. And id say that the Bm WILL corner flatter and smoother whereas the MK5 GTI would start understeering and scrabbling for grip.....BUT the VW felt more planted on less than perfect surfaces and inspired confidence to push it to the limit more.....IM JUST IN A CATCH 22.........

My experiences with 1 series (not driven any) two guys at work own a 120d M Sport 3dr hatch and a 118d SE 5 door, both look a bit boring (interior is just to the point).  One has had a wheel sensor replaced (6K on the clock), the other an entire steering rack because a sensor went, luckily just under warranty (18K miles on the clock) and also had to have the filter changed in the washer bottle for not using BMW washer fluid £90 that cost, not a warranty option.  The coupe also looks like a hair dressers car, but looks better than the hatches. Neither could get anywhere in the snow, didnt matter how little, and they always ran away as soon as it started.  I was amazed that it didn't move in a flat car park. My GT TDI mk5, 4yr old, 60K on the clock and whats went wrong.  A seat airbag wiring fault under the passenger seat and the left front speaker went.  Headunit replaced.  All under warranty.  Also add on the cost of the same options to a 1 series and you soon find it costs more that a Golf.  Also BMWs labour rates are higher for servicing e.t.c.

Its up to you.
