mark6 GTI or 123d m sport???????????
« on: 22 March 2010, 12:10 »
HIya all.........i KNOW its a GTI forum but i REALLY am undecided.......i have yet to test drive either but have an 05 plate 120d and find it an EXCELLENT and balanced drive. Great steering and chassis balance.....BUT a MK6 GTI is appealing to me........BUT....so is a 123d........has anyone driven both???? I know Diesel vs petrol isnt exactly comparable but on paper they offer similar pace. I also know its RWD vs FWD but the GTI i KNOW is a tidy, balanced FWD performer so i need advice folks!!!!! Will you have as much fun in a MK6 GTI FWD or a 204BHP RWD Diesel?????????????? Thanks!!!!!

We have two cars in our house. A petrol-engined MKV and a diseasel-powered BMW 1-series. I drove the 123d before we got ours.

Ok, yes, on certain roads/speeds you can ride the wave of torque, but the extra 150kg+ in the nose really hurts the balance/handling on a B-road blast.

However, if embarrassing Civic Type R drivers on a motorway is your thing, then yeah, go for the BMW.

BUT, I'd go for the GTI! Free-revving petrol is the way to go! It is reasonably economical, after all... :afro:
MKV GTI | Reflex Silver | 5-dr | Anthracite 17" | Manual | Highline MFD | Cruise | Revision 'D' DV | Dirty Pipes |

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

That was my dilemma  -  123d or Gti  -  I did consider the 135i but the 123d makes more sense than the 135i (an aside...the coupes look better than the convertible)  -  the Gti is an icon, the 1-series BMW is not  -  the Gti is more practical for families with kids  - I felt that the Golf Gti was better value than the 1-series and I assume that the Gti will hold its value better than the 1-series. The Golf Gti has been around for decades, tried and tested -  and continually developed  -  whereas the 1-series is relatively new. I guess the other deciding factor is that I've never had a BMW, never been a BMW person  -  the brand just isn't me. Something has always stopped me buying a BMW  -  IMO, and no disrespect to BMW owners, it's the default choice, it's for people who don't have enough imagination to come up with another choice of car  -  that's probably rubbish and I do appreciate that they are ahead of Merc in the driveability/fun factor of their cars and the fuel/diesel economy.
I've probably upset a lot of people  -  unintentional and I'm probably talking rubbish. Sorry.

thanks!!!! im swaying towards the GTI......BUT im not against BMW as a brand and i will admit that a RWD car, even a Diesel is much more fun as a rule. Kicking the back end out when roads are quiet, etc.....and BMWs do this rather excellently.............I LOVE both VWs AND BMWs.....i STILL cannot decide..................

Well, if you're used to having something styled like a dog turd on your drive I can't throw the looks issue at you, so all I can recommend is you drive both and make up your mind.
The GTI feels a bit flat feeling in the mid range but is otherwise very accomplished and user friendly.

I didn't drive the 123d so I can't really say too much  -  I did drive the Gti and I loved it  -  it's so personal and your own practical considerations will be part of the 'weighing it all up' thing  -  have you driven both? I think the Golf Gti is more of an all-round, grown up, established icon of a car and that the impracticalities and space limitations of the 1-series would have annoyed me after a while  -  the 1-series coupe is a bit small, a bit 'squat', dare I say too much of a toy? You've got to drive them both  -  no-one can make the decision for you....good luck...

Only you can decide what is best for you by having a test drive of both cars.
BMW's are good cars but with the winters we have I would never consider a rear wheel drive car , mind I live up north.

Exonian, thats my problem wth the GTI....i think the cost should provide you with more than 207bhp......its well known the setup can handle more........

the Gti isn't meant to be a Focus RS  -  it an all-round package, it's about the driving experience (I believe  -  haven't got mine yet)  -  the quoted 0-62 is 6.9 secs but many people suggest that it's more like 6.5  -  there'll be cars that are sub-6 secs that wont be as good a drive as the Golf Gti  -  again, drive them both and then decide  -  you can't make an informed decision without test drives.
