BMW 123d or GTI hum its that priority list again for the OP. If you want to play silly buggers drifting etc then buy the cortina BMW with wide wheels.

thanks for all the input guys!!!!! BUT without wishing to be snooty at ALL, i know the 1 series 5 door especially divides opinion on styling and looks, it has rather grown on me across the years and i rather like it now!!!!! its different from the norm.....and please forgive me i LOVE GTIs mk5 and 6 epsecially....but they are not exactly beautifully handsome machines either?????? Solid, sporting and agressive hatchback would be my personal description. Thats NOT a knock at them BTW because i love these cars.....just maybe think a 130 m sport would be a more satisfying drive?????????????????????

true snoopy......very true. the time will be SOON............i like both cars for different reasons.....and maybe the closest competitor in the 1 range is the(now obsolete) 130 m sport to the GTI???????????? I shall see..........and i KNOW RWD is USELESS in winter/snow!!!!!!!! IF i take the BM path.....winter tyres will be purchased this year......

so, Rich, go the whole hog  -  135i  -  that said, the brilliance of BMW here is the 123d  -  sub 7 seconds to 60 and that MPG! the 123d is the top of the diesel 1 series and the 135i is the top of the petrol 1's  -  I reckon that if you were to get the 130i, you'd be saying 'I should have.....' but drive the cars!!!
