tickety sound.

My 84 gti (kjet) has developed a very tickety sound under acceleration. It isnt noticeable on idle.

I noticed it after starting it on friday. I am sure it wasnt bad before, so its as though it has happened over night. I changed the oil and filter on saturday (assuming it was old oil) and it hasnt changed anything.

is it likely my tappets have had it? Car has done 90k with no history of a change. Are these still available to buy new? couldnt find any on gsf, but i might be being a fool.

or is there something that could just go overnight to cause this?

Pinking?

If it's like my 84 gti then it has solid lifters rather than hydraulic, so they can be/have to be adjusted.

JUST remembered? I used expensive fuel on friday, when i normally use sh!t stuff. could this be making it make the different sound?

can you explain what this is? i cant find an idiots explanation on the internet. It does it in all gears, throughout the length of acceleration (until the engine noise drowns it out)

Is it bad for the car? how much damage can i do driving it about?

Using expensive fuel I assume you are talking optimax,usually stops pinking as these cars like to run on higher octane fuel so I wouldn't of thought this was causing it

Were you running on 95octane fuel? And by expensive you mean 98octane?

Yeah, i probably am using the wrong name by saying "high octane."

but i normally buy the cheapest (which is think is 95?) then decided to try the other bp ultimate (not sure its real name) and now it sounds bad. I dont know whether to drive it out and try on the stuff i used to use, in case there is something wrong and its doing damage?

I can't see how it would do any damage unless your cars a diesel

Just get a mech to take the rocker off and check for any bits at the top end (i asume from not knowing petrol types you arent the most hands on guy  ). Were there any bits of metal in the oil when you changed it? If theres nowt going on at the top, the only place it could ly is at the bottom.

Rattling under acceleration? I will just ignore that... And then my car shat itself

i have changed the rocker cover gasket, so had the top off, done my coilovers, wheel bearings, and both fuel pumps.

bolting stuff on and off is easy ha.

just never paid attention to how the thing actualy works if that makes sense.

Ah ok, well get that rocker off and get the sump off... any little bits of metal and you have problems!
