For what it's worth, my 87 digifant sounded like a tin full of nails on super unleaded/optimax and much better on the regular cheap stuff.  Seems to go against Reasty's post, but I'm guessing my engine couldn't advance/retard the timing to make the most of the slower burning fuel or something.  I'm not too technical, so it's probably wrong!

I think its definitely engine related, it seems pretty consistent with the accelerator and i generally know my other rattles ha.

that puts my mind at ease a little!

I  filled up with cheap stuff again today to try to flush the other stuff out, see if there is any progress.

I'd take it to a garage mate rather than try to describe an engine noise problem on here as you will never get a straight answer without us hearing  the noise ourselves. Can you record the sound and post up on here? May help a bit.

In my experience if its timing too far advanced it makes it hard to start when warm aswell as pinking.

Ive had a 1.6 driver thats had the same problem a put super unleaded in by accident sounded like a bag of spanners for a couple of days put unleaded in after that it sorted itself out thought this might help before you go to any garages

yeah cheers, i am going to try and flush it out, see if there is any progress before looking like a tool at a garage.
