why does it not have one ?
« on: 21 March 2010, 20:00 »
hello all
ive just bought a mk 2 5door 16v  (1992)i think its atlas grey got it cheap! as i know  you guys know onions  . thought id ask a couple of questions on few points. have spent the day fixing both ft electric windows ,sorted a bkn rear wiper motor and replaced rear seat belts ,removed sigma alarm that was fitted (insurance company not reconising it),hoping to fit a suitable one at the weekend. my question is my isv has no plug  fitted to it have looked round enginge bay for it, its not there so been cut or removed plus after looking in haynes manual as i didnt know its name i have no overrun cut off valve or associated componets ie pipes or a plug to connect too,i have a donor car that i dont want to have to have somone remove and replace engine with ,is it a case of finding a loom with cut wires in?

is it definitly an original 16v, since all the bits you mention are missing that makes me wonder if its had an engine swap from an 8v?

if it runs alright now id not worry too much about it. if you were really bothered what you would want is the complete engine loom from a 90 onwards 16v, plus the ISV control unit from behind the console and wiring from that to the plugs on the engine loom. the over-run valve behind the airbox stops the car cuting out when you dip the clutch at high revs, and the other metal valve adds a bit of fuel if you floor it when cold.

is this car going to be a keeper as is, or do you fancy an engine swap in the future?  If you fancy a better engine in the future then I'd be tempted to live with it as is, plenty of MK1 16v conversions with the above bits missing. generally the 16v will run alright with the above missing once warmed up, from cold they can be a bit fussy but rasing the idle can help.  If its going to be kept as is for the long term then I would be stripping the other 16v for the proper bits. If you fit all the bits off this car back to it then it'll still be a runner after all!
