car sometimes starts ok,  goes then will not start, gets towed home 3 times in last 2 weeks , then will/ wont go!
if it starts.. it can be warm or from cold, sometimes it will fire instantly.. sometime no chanch
then can leave, and come back and for no reason it might start.
the local garage have said that the next thing to look at is the fuel pump.. dont think there too gened up!
is there any tests that can be done. as if it is very eratic, as went for about 2 hours yesterday, with over 10 stops/ starts.

it has had new plugs, distributor, and a  relay on fuel pump,    the local garage is stummped.   any help/ advice would be great
have just read that when distributor is changed, the battery should be disconnected for 30 mins for ecu to reset?
i didnt do this, was changed 2 weeks ago, is it to late, or should i try/ do this now?

When you say goes then will not start, is it not starting from hot, i.e you've been driving, stopped somewhere for a few minutes, then got back in and the car won't start.  Does it start from cold?

Have a look under the bonnet. Near the coolant bottle there is a small black box near the scuttle pannel, it has two wires going into it. Does the plastic have any cracks in it?
Golf MK3 1.8 auto and I didn't pay a grand for the "priveledge", auto windows all round and a AC. Oh and I've got a luggage net you pricks!

Does that make my willy look bigger?

Oh yeah it's called Helda or something....

When you had a new dizzy fitted was it a new dizzy or dizzy cap. If a new dizzy did they set it up properly if it is out it can cause it to not start properly and even cut out. Mite need slight adjustment.

Just read you've got sparks. Mind you they may not be big/frequent enough.

If that's cracked it could be the problem, not if you've got decent sparks though. That's the coil.

It was a brand new dizzy fitted by mobile mech. i would have had dought about it, but it has ran perfect for 11 days, and with better pick up
than ever.  have you heard or read about having to unhook the battery for 30 mins for the ecu to reset itself?
