CV joints or something more sinister???

Hi Guys

For around a month now I've had a loud knocking noise when turning the wheel and pulling off slowly. This happens on both left and right turns and disappears if I push the clutch.
I assumed this was a problem with the CV joints so jacked the car up but couldn't replicate the noise and didn't feel any real resistance while spinning the wheel. The boots were also fine, with no rips or tears.
Driving to work today and the problem has got much worse. The steering wheel now shakes quite violently when turning and im not looking forward to the drive home!
Does this sound like a CV joint problem or something else??
If it is a CV problem how do I identify which side is at fault??

I have a similar probelm whereby there is a knocking noise when I turn corners, seems to come from the nearside, i was thinking possibly something to do with the suspension or wishbone maybe?

Sounds like the wishbone bushes are shot. CV joints make a ticking noise on full lock when they're overly worn.

How easy/difficult are they to relpace and is it expensive to do?

The wishbone bushes can be a pain to be honest as they need pressing in. Cheapest way is to buy the buches , get the wishbones off the car and drop them to a local garage to press them in and then refit yourself. Best to do both sides at the same time as well.

Timewise is it a long job start to finish? I might drop the car off with my mechanic and have him do it if its an hour job or so...

Yeah I'd say about an hour a side if you got all the tools and a lift.

Ah, now I have my doubts now you have mentioned having the right tools... hmmm what, inparticular would I need?
Is there something specialist required?  :undecided:

A press for the bushes is the only specialist tool, the rest is just sockets and long extension bars for the inevitable bloody tight old bolts.

At £15 per wishbone INC bushes why piss about with getting bushes pressed in? That's if it is your wishbones at fault
