rear calipers - urgent plz

Hi,

Quite urgent as my car failed its MOT on this. Would mk4 Golf 4motion rear calipers fit on my mk2 gti. I know special hoses are needed from C&R.  MK4 Golf calipers fit, will the 4motions be the same or not?

What pads do i use?

should be the same, i got mine off a gti went on as a straight swap (with the hoses) you use just normal mk2 pads as far as i remember. when you order the hoses ask the guys at c&r they're quite happy to give you advice. thats what i did!

Someones offered me v6 4motion ones for ?50 he had some hoses from C and R aswell. Now just need time to fit them.

Im going to look into mk3 rear pads, vr6 possibly, these will be thicker, make up for the disc thickness between a mk2 and mk4 unless there the same. Does this make sense?

yeah it makes sense. make sure you adjust the brakes properly to fit the pads or you can balls them up. the first set i had were played around with and were miles out of alignment which meant they wouldn't work, so i got a second set and just stuck them on. easy job!

so which pads do you use? whats the thickness difference between mk4 and mk2 discs

I dont think it would matter but the bloke who gave me the 4motion calipers said that the mk4 disc looks as though its twice as thick as the mk2 one.

Pad choice shouldnt really matter because once there worn the piston comesa out anyway.

What do you mean adjust the brakes properly?

why dont you just free up your existing calipers for ?0?

only reason they seize is due to poor maintenance. once you free them up again give them a good soaking in WD40 & grease every so often (service time) and they'll never seize again

I've got mk4's on the rear too 

You have to use mk2 pads so I was told, and I'm assuming the adjustments mentioned are one of the following:-

1. Make sure you wind back the calliper piston before fitting.
2. Make sure you clamp the break bias valve on the axle before bleeding
3. Make sure you pump the peddle loads to get the calliper piston to 'sit' properly to ensure the pads are on the face of the disk, not miles away !

Also another word of advice - use the bleed valves from the mk2 callipers, not the new mk4 ones as they tend to leak air !

Gambit lol funny you should say that. My ones are ok now. I spent the weekend taking them apart, freeing them up using wd40/spray grease and copper grease. The braking has improved to no end. My rear break compensator was also siezed which now works fine.

The only reason im considering mk4 calipers is because i think one of my calipers might be knackered, the handbrake adjustment lever is all funny and no amount of tinkering with sort it.

is the handbrake mech working on both sides?

mine done something similar when it was seized on one side. the handbrake cable had to be near enough vertical before it worked
