Would a split breather / turbo pipe cause MPG to reduce??

Hi Guy's,

As above really - Got some huge split in a breather / turbo pipe - just hisses down the road - Got it booked in for tues (only had car since sat)

Would the split cause MPG to reduce??

Haha, Thats the 64 million dollar question - it's booked in for tues to find out. I've noticed that on tickover with the bonnet up that the hiss can be very faintly heard around the turbo area so don't exactly know for sure.

I've also read that it's quite common on the 130 to hear a hiss - is that right???

My MPG is only returning around 34 at the min so something has to be wrong.

I presume you get thick black smoke when you accelerate too?

Stick you head down by the drivers wheel as its common for it to leak there. 

My bet would be on the red turbo outlet pipe which sadly will rob you of £100

I wish I could get more than 34 mpg 

I've averaged over the last 2 weeks, about 460miles (tank not to empty but just above red), mostly in Oxford traffic and at average 23mph with 32mpg  If I did go for the 1.8T or V6 I'd be raped with 15mpg I reckon

Well I definately get smoke coming out the back on hard acceleration - more noticeable at night when you look in the rear view mirror and see it through the car behinds headlights. I don't know if it's thick and black or just greyish. I did see a passat TDI next to me the other day that booted out some thick black crud.

If I had another horrible problem just as a head gasket, surely I would see, hear and smell this on tickover when I put my head down next to the exhaust??

I just think with the hissing and poor MPG it's got to be a boost leak like Rhyso says.

the turbo hose usually comes loose where one section joins to another the cast lugs break off. Simple fix is to jubile clip both hoses and use a bit of wire to brace them together. I used a coat hanger for the wire

I very much doubt it's the HG, don't panic yourself by thinking the worst.

So is the slight hissing noise normal as golfwannabe said he was told the 130 makes a slight hissing noise.

When my bonnet is open i can sometimes hear a sort of hissing noise but with all the bloody tractor noises of the diesel I find it hard to tell if it's hissing or normal.
