Neil what you going to do with your old RCD510?

snoopy have you heard the dynaudio in the Golf? If so what's your opinion? I know you're in the know with car audio.
I know i have comented on this a few times on here in the past and i do remember a long thread on it. For the price and what you get i think its a good deal. No real bass below about 50hz, Ok midbass, smooth midrange, polite treble lacking true extension but very polite typical dynaudio sound. A nice polite  tonality to it (some may say dull tonality) but has little to no real image and soundstage recreation. (Its the Iplop earbud generation so image and soundstage whats that!)
I do think us golf owners/soon owners got short changed compared to what passat owners get. (better midbass and better bottom end extension(due to 8" in the doors and aditional small midrange units). I also don't understand why VW did not go for a similar setup to what Dynaudio offer to Volvo cars as theres is far superior as theres has a sort of image/soundstage due to logic steering and a centre chanel/more power and an optional sub.

I agree.
There was no image or soundstage.
The sound was very bland with no bass extension.
The high frequencies were also a bit strangled.
I felt the system was not very musical.

Dynaudios have always been laid back and smooth thats there way, there studio monitors, pro, home systems are the same. They also show up the quality of bad recordings(mp3/massmarket tat) more than poor speakers.

I used to be a Hi Fi 'addict' and participated on listening panels.
Got quite a good system, both analogue and digital.
Prefer my Pink Triangle turntable with SME Series V arm to the high end CD player I have.
MP3 sounds rubbish. I simply don't bother.

So are we of the opinion that £500-1000 spent on aftermarket gear is a better way to go? Or would it cost a lot more than that to better it?

I'm looking at used GTI's (can't face the wait on a new one!) and I had dynaudio down as a must have, a lot of positive reviews in other forums when I was searching last night. Would make life easy though if it's not *that* great, and can be easily matched with aftermarket stuff (although I do like the branded tweeters in the dynaudio setup  )

You can always better it for soundstage and imaging. For tonality? due to what will need to be changed and excluding fitting and materials imo bottom budget no, top budget probably, (worth the effort, depends on the person 99.5% would say no) depends what you define as better.
