Anything else other than a vice? i need to do my nearside rear. dont know if its the same principle?
I think the rear beam needs to come out to change the rear bearings

I would suggest getting someone to press the bearing. You won't remove the old one with a socket and hammer, unless you are lucky.
You may be able to fit the new one with a vice, but its alot easier with a press.
Also if the mk4 is anything like previous models, you will need a knife edge puller to remove the bearing race from the hub.
Not really a job for a novice.
done both my fronts that way
had no problems getting the bearing out. and its just as easy putting the new bearing in using a vice as it is using a press. can do a front bearing in under an hour
the only problem is as you said the inner race needs to be pulled off the hub, or you can grind it back a little and use a chisel to break the race of. taking care not to damage or mark the hub
