Thanks everyone, I am feeling a little more positive today!!  I looked around at other golf's for sale, and decided I really like my golf, especially when it's running. So I am gonna change some more parts. I am not really going back to Fords either!!

Gonna change relays this week.  Also found one of the HT leads is corroded inside, and just falls off the plug with a gentle tap.  Also found one of the dizzy cap clips is missing, and the dizzy cap is fairly loose as a result.

So I will change the dizzy cap, plugs, and leads to.

Another thread said change relay 30, there are two relays with 30 on them, or am I looking at totally  the wrong thing?!

i had same prob it got to a point where it would cut out at about 10mins turned out to be the POWER RELAY (ecu relay i thinks) also change the fuel relay aswel, as thats what the vw specialist said it was.
