What's wrong with my GTI?
« on: 22 February 2010, 19:07 »
In neutral the car sounds like its on its way to stalling, then revs from 800 to about 2000 revs then back to 800 revs. This revving pattern keeps repeating itself without the car stalling  :undecided:

I put Esso super unleaded 97 petrol 6 days ago because was nowhere near a shell garage to get the proper pertrol, unsure if this is related.

The car still feels responsive when driving although the revs dont seem to drop off as quick when lift foot completely off accelerator

(Manual not DSG)

Any ideas?
Cheers

Whats the age and mileage?

MAF is one possible culprit but there are many more.  Best bet is to get it hooked up to a diagnostic machine (VAGCOM or VCDS as its now known) is a good one.  Depending where you are there might be a forum member willing to help out

Any warning lights on?

I would also say a vac leak by the sound of it.

You really need to get a laptop hooked up to the car so you can see what the ecu is seeing and doing.

Where are you from?

It could be a number of things related, or unrelated to each other...

I had the high/low idling symptoms for a while, but a new throttle body sorted it out, but it could also be the MAF, PCV, DV, software reflash, fuelling issues...

Search for all of these things on the forum for some more info, but really VAGCOM/VCDS is your friend. Get some data logged and it'll save you time & money. :afro:

There's quite a few people on here from in/around the Leeds area. If not in here, deffo in the MKVI section.

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

Have you tried disconnecting the cable going to the MAF?

Also I'd look at the coilpacks too, but by the symptoms you describe it could be simply loose pipework. Have you been under the bonnet recently? if so where and what for?  Often it is something that gets disrupted inadvertantly whilst doing another job.

Thanks for all the replies.

I have only had the car for 4 months so bit gutted that something gone wrong already, warranty expired last month!

Can somebody explain what MAF, PCV, DV are cos i havent got a clue being a newbie!

I havent been under the bonnet, only to check oil etc but will check see if anything looks loose.

What are Stealers likely to charge to investigate the problem?

Cheers again
