Thanks for all the replies.
I have only had the car for 4 months so bit gutted that something gone wrong already, warranty expired last month!
Can somebody explain what MAF, PCV, DV are cos i havent got a clue being a newbie!
I havent been under the bonnet, only to check oil etc but will check see if anything looks loose.
What are Stealers likely to charge to investigate the problem?
Cheers again

Without going into too much detail...

MAF - Mass air filter - senses the quantity of air being drawn into the turbo at any given time. If faulty can give out an irratic idle as well as make the car under-perform or surge.
PCV - Pressure check valve - basically is a tap off the engine to help monitor running pressure. If faulty can give an irratic idle and can bleed out pressure from the car giving an underperforming engine.
DV - Diverter valve - this is a recirculating valve which helps dispel excess pressure from the car, sometimes misconstrued as being a "blow off" valve. This is more likely to give an underperforming car than an irratic idle and wouldn't in my opinion give anything like a surge on idle up to 2krpm like you are suffering from.

Stealers will charge anything up to £100 just to strap on their diagnostic equipment and tell you what they THINK is wrong with the car. They will go down the normal diagnostic route, but may change some items that are in good working order before correcting the right part/s.

To be quite honest with you, the car needs someone to diagnose what is wrong with it before anything is done. An independant garage will be cheaper and if there are people in your area with VAG-COM/VCDS then maybe they will be able to help for a few beer tokens/petrol money.

Thanks R32UK, the car is booked in tomorrow at VW Leeds

I think i may cancel and give IVC a call.

Have you had any dealings with VW Leeds or just heard bad things on the grape vine?

To the OP.... I had my car in an Independent VAG garage for FOUR days looking at the same problem you described.

It turned out to be the throttle body causing the normal 800rpm idle to fluctuate between 650-2000rpm.

I still had 'flat' performace, which could be any number of the other things I described. These are known weak parts, as well as the coil packs that Hurdy mentioned, so really you must get it to a garage...

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

The car is now fixed and running smoooooooth

Throttle body needed stripping and cleaning. The guy at IVC Leeds knew the solution before even seeing the car. Apparently is common if car does lots of short journeys which i do - 3 mile trip to work, 3 mile trip back again, not been on any long journeys for about 3 weeks.

Case closed.

Excellent, glad you got it sorted. Now, be sure and give your car an 'Italian tune-up' now and then...

Good stuff. IVC seem to know what they are doing.. and judging by the number of VAG cars they have onsite they are doing it well
