Dealer speaker upgrade...worth it or not??
« on: 11 February 2010, 09:42 »
Went to a respected car audio place who quoted £900 to fit an amp, new front speakers and a sub woofer to my Edition 30...to be honest, more than I'd budgeted for. So, rang local VW centre who said they'd replace all the speakers in the car for £494 all inclusive. Obviously you get what you pay for and the amp and sub would be the better option but.....is the dealer option worth it?? I'm not a boy racer who wants to rattle peoples windows as I drive down the road...just want a better sound! Any thoughts very welcome. Cheers!

Why not source the kit and install it yourself?

agreed. replaced speekers on cars before and its not hard. also wired subs before and its not hard. and you could save wayy loads of money compared to how much there charging

Do you have details on the kit that:
a) the independant wants to install and
b) what the dealer is going to install?

I appreciate that £900 is more than you were originally looking to spend.
If they're installing a £100 pair of components, a £200 amplifier and a £100 sub/box combo it's dreadful value for money because it represents max 3 hours work.

If, however, you're talking about Morel/Rainbow/top end DLS components a very high end Genesis amp and a top notch JL sub, it's starting to sound better value for money....

Which leads me onto the VW option; at a little over half as much, you're obviously going to be tempted - but you need to consider what exactly it is they're going to do; crack open the doors and replace standard speakers with upgraded stuff? That's it, no amp, no sub, right?

So, depending on what it is they're putting in there, I'd feel safe in betting a lot of money you aren't going to get the performance increase that you're looking for. If you are, then you're easily satisifed, and could do the same job yourself with off-the shelf stuff and have change from £200.

Try to find out exactly what each place was offering (brands and models) and I'll comment further.

Being passionate about music and liking decent reproduction doesn't mean you have to wear a baseball cap backwards - likewise, having a sub in your boot (pretty much a necessity if you want deep lows and to listen to how the music was intended to be listened to) doesn't mean you're a boy racing chav. Don't let that put you off going with a better, aftermarket set up.

also are you running a standard head unit. as they only have a output of around 8watt. which isnt much. not sure what aftermarket speekers would sound like runing off this but you may need some sort of amp or a non standard head unit to give a better sound

Hi

£900 is a lot of money.

But, the brands mentioned are respected and if you don't know how to do this stuff yourself then maybe getting it installed by someone else is a necessary option.

The concern I would have from the dealership is the hourly rate you would pay and therefore how much of the 500 would actually be on the speaker upgrades?

EDIT - you ask which is the better option?  Forget boy-racer sound, a sub completes the bottom end and helps to negate the road noise that makes your stereo sound tinny and weak.

I have a sub in my other car - its a 10" in a sealed box 'firing' into the cabin.  It's only set to about 50% and so the stereo sounds great but you dont just hear thump thump thump.  Using an amp to power the cabin speakers and not asking the head unit to try to drive them means you get a cleaner sound with more a more powerfull sound.  That doesnt just mean louder though.
