Leather v Cloth
« on: 09 February 2010, 06:50 »
p3eps says ""Cars with leather generally sell for approximately £1000 more than without according to the VW Used website... "

They might do, but they cost £1800 more in the first place. Also, I don't think for most people the only consideration when speccing is the resale value. I could have afforded leather, but went for the standard cloth because I think they look better and add a "lift" to the interior. My previous 3 cars have all had leather and I'm a bit fed up with it.

When my ED30 was written off (yawn...) I had to spend some time trying to find similar specced cars to compare for insurance purposes.  When I was looking at GTI's, the VW Used site seemed to give approximately £1000 for a car with leather over one with cloth.

Like I said in the thread you're quoting - I haggled mine for £1300.
If it wasn't for the Golf R having white bolsters on the seats I wouldn't bother as I think leather in general (whether its full leather and great quality, of part leather etc) is a waste of money.  It does look nice, but its a pain in the butt as its either roasting hot or freezing cold!

For me the half and half seats in the ED30 were the ideal solution.  The leather bolsters give great support, but the cloth centers mean the heated seats work great and that you're never roasting or freezing!

Half and half would be perfect.
Those light coloured cloth bolsters are horrid.
You had no choice but to get leather and you got a good deal.

To expand this slightly tired topic, how about a third option? Alacantra!

I had this on my old Type R and loved it. Hard wearing like cloth, but soft and a bit more special (think motorsport) like leather.

Mk6 Golf GTI 5dr, DBP, Monza Shadow, Xenons, ACC, RCD510, Park Assist, Camera, Lux pack.... and now bluetooth.... and now DSG!

Had this in the MkiV R32, great combination! After 6 years still looked pretty good.

Yea alcantara is a very valid option in my opinion my brother has it on the s3 . I think a car like a GTI should have a little bit more choice in the type of seats to choose .

Absolutely.
Hard wearing but soft.
Cloth inserts + Alcantara for the bolsters just as in a Type R.

Alcantara would have been perfect for me too. I was looking at at GT TDi before settling on the GTD, and thought the black alcantara would save me the money of upgrading to leather. Course you cant get it in the GTD.

Leathers kinda horses for courses I guess, I really like it, have it in my Passat thats getting traded and wanted it again as I`m planning to keep the Golf for a long time.

Plus points for leather option...

heated seats inclusive
wipe clean
more upmarket look ?

Minus points for leather

cold in winter
not exactly breathable in summer - very hot days and lots of miles = sweaty back
needs treatment
looks bad when scuffed / cracked, especially drivers seat bolster IMO

Horses for courses - i've probably had more issues, and spent longer looking after, leather seats than cloth.  I personally think the tartan is part of the GTI heritage.
