Advise on heater
« on: 08 February 2010, 22:01 »
Looking at removing the bypass connector as detailed here
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=31666.0

my question for now is.

I take it the Bypass is the small pipe that connects the two together. Could I not just cut that in two and block both ends of that and that would remove the bypass the same as removing both parts and replacing with copper tubes?

I believe they're "one use only" valves inside. So once the matrix bursts once then you have to replace them.

I know that on my mk2 jetta I bought new hoses to/from the matrix from GSF which meant you didn't need to use bits of copper pipe..

But don't buy it from GSF. It perished verrrry quickly!

my matrix has not burst its just that I get feck all heat in the cabin. The fix seems to be remove these componants and use copper pipe. the bypass seems to be the small hose that links the two pipes together -  so cut that and block it surley that will force all coolant into the matrix ?

If your matrix is not bust... I would check these valves by ruuning the engine til it's up to temp and feel the pipes after the valves too see if they are as warm as the ones befor the valves....

If they are all cool then it maybe your water pump, or the thermostat sticking closed... I Guess...

As for not using the GSF ones I don't see what other options you have as VAG Only have one of the two pipes the other is NLA... and the one they do have is £30.00 plus vat....

The GSF ones and a 1.5 litre bottle of G12 coolant cost less than that!!!

In answer to your actual question, no you can't simply cut and block the smaller bypass pipe. If the valve is buggered you wont be able to force the flow through it, you will simply stop all flow from the flange on the engine.

You got any pics of your dad's split ?

As said, cutting or blocking the small pipe will have no effect, the problem with these is that there is a small thermostat in the metal bit that gets tired and shuts off the flow to the matrix at too low a temp, the black plastic bit just has a one way valve in it. If you look down the end of the metal bit (the end with the flange) you will see a flat metal 'sort of ' plug, just put the unit in a vice and drill an 8mm hole through the centre of that, its very soft metal so very easy (careful though, its a bit wobbly). Flush all the swarf out of it then put the whole lot back (make sure the thin bypass pipe is not full of smeg first and make sure the black plastic valve is clear). It will no longer operate as intended but it fits and saves messing with copper pipe, also you still get some bypass flow which does not go through the matrix so the matrix might just run a little cooler. Make sure you get the black bit back in as it came out, if you get it wrong the one way valve will be against the flow and you'll get no heat.

Copper pipe option is a quick and easy fix. Throw away everything in your pic (both valves and the small bore pipe) and stick in two lengths of copper pipe. Marvelous.

This is one of the best quick fixes ever, takes about 10 minutes to do (anyone can do it) and the car gets that warm you need to turn the  heater down  within 10 minutes of it being on hot, like a sauna, but without the chicks

Enjoy the heat on these cold winter mornings
