just read about the attempted break in. pleased they didnt take anything and the damage is fixed.

nice kitchen table antics. i'd get shot for that

shes quite understanding! plus i bribe her with "the sooner i can paint it, the sooner it will be off the table!"

Anyway.....

Wow what a day. determined not to let the break in* get me down, i decided to crack on with my new bumper, cross members and solid engine mount. stayed on at work until 7pm to finish this!

New bits lined up

Front of the car hanging over the end of the ramp, engine supported ready for crossmember removal  :lipsrsealed:

Old engine crossmember off

Feeding the PAS pipe back though (had to disconnect for crossmember removal) and fabricated new rad supports for the new front crossmember (shiny bolts left and right)

New mk2 -> VR6 solid engine mount fitted:

All done minus lower bumper valance (it was dark so hence the bad photo:

only thing left to do is fix the lower bumper valance back on, the pattern bumper has thinner holes that the OE one, so i'll need to do some trimming. also the fogs dont align properly but they're sprayed black so i dont really notice it  :lipsrsealed:

Result:

Quieter and lighter PAS pump now system was drained and has new fluid.
5th gear is now no longer a lucky-dip, all gear changes are more positive.
Car feels more connected both through steering and acceleration/deccaleration
All bolts copper slipped (and some missing ones added) for longevity/ease of removal in future

* police called me at work yesterday to inform me that someone has been arrested in connection with the break in and other break ins within the village on the same night!

I don't think a semi will give the same results

Trimming the big bumper lower valances (so they'll fit into the new aftermarket bumper):

Using an old (broken) valance i trimmed off the valance to arch trim 'peg' and glued it onto the good one:

Currently with no valance or number plate  :lipsrsealed:

New cross members and solid mount (bad pictures, sorry!)

And getting 5th gear without fumbling around... is a real luxury!  yay!

Great work :afro:

I take it that the pattern bumper is of ok quality then?? Certainly looks alright!

The car looks so much cleaner without the front number plate on, you not tempted to run it in the windscreen instead?

Also great to hear that the police have arrested someone, I know it'd make me feel better if I was in your situation

2 problems with the bumper:
- fog light mounting bracket holes are in the wrong place, about 1/4 inch out so the fog mounts & lamps dont sit in the holes 100% correctly
- the holes for accomodating the valance/spoiler in the base of the bumper are too small, so i've had to trim the valance down to slot in properly

its fine apart from that. but i doubt perfectionists would be happy.

whats worrying is theres still a gap between the bottom of the grill and the top of the bumper. i believe the slam panel needs tweaking downwards as it was about 1/2 inch out where it bolts through into the front crossmember (on the right hand side of this pic):

required some muscles getting it to line up.

You don't own a Mk2, you support it.

Chris I took my PAS pipe over the front mount and it sits nice there and then cable tied the rest to the slam pannel its much safer and neat instead of it hanging near bottom of the bumper?
Jay

Looking good though!
