NOS 16V
« on: 02 November 2004, 15:33 »
Hi There

My MkII 90 16v is running sweet since the camchain has been changed, fueling sorted and drilled and k&n'd airbox.  However, I am thinking of going for a Nitrous Oxide kit just to add some punch when going up against bigger hitters.  Does anyone run a NOS 16V or have any experience of one? Should cost around ?600? Would probably get it fitted professionally.  Cheers for any advice.

tell us how you get on. not going to do mine but i am interested.

as far as i can tell its the expensive way of getting added performance, plus you can remove it from the car easily.

(expensive cause the gas doesn't last long)

If you want a faster car get a VR6! The idea of NOS in a 16V is just REDICULOUS!!!!
i say if you want nos in a 16v then do it! where's the fun in modifing cars if you go for the easy option every time. if i'm honest i was thinking about nitrous in my beast!!

Ok, first things first, Its not NOS its nitrous, NOS is a brand name, Just like Nitrous Express.

Secondly, If you have more than 20,000 miles on your motor, Forget it. Nitrous doesnt acctually cause damage to your motor unless somthings ready to break, If thats the case, It will speed up the damage process

Thirdly, If its a 16V its gonna take a LOT more work to get nitrous than you think, Its gonna have to be a direct port injection kit because of the macanical Injectors, Thats the most expencive kit avalable  :-\

Forth, You have to choose how to run it, Theres no big red button like on TV, If you want more than 25BHPs worth of power, Your gonna need a progressive Timing controler that regulates how much goes in, This costs yet more ???

Fifth a ?6000 nitrous kit including instalation...Not good, Expecially not for direct port, I know the Bespoke Nitrous boys and they would still charge me ?1300 including fitting for a standard kit and computer, You could be looking at around ?2000 for direct port. You DONOT want to go for cheap kits on this one, Nitrous its self isnt explosive, However the tanks are pressurised and can explode, If one of the pipes had a crack in it your gonna also freeze everything around the pipe which can cause extencive damage.

Nitrous isnt as easy as the movies make out, If you still want it, Theres a lot to take in, I think the owner of Bespoke spent about an hour telling me all the rules of nitrous and how it works, Also, on an older engine, If you still want to risk running it, DONOT put in more than 50BHP progressive, You will kill it, Simple, However if you have a 1.8T motor, You can put a straight non progressive burt right in at 100BHP  :o

Oh, so NOS is not technically right.  However, nitrous isn't either it's nitrous oxide.  I really wanted a big red button, ideally on gear knob, but now you point out there isn't one I'm going off the idea!

Maybe I'll spend the money on a 1.6 driver instead and put a big sticker on the windscreen to bring it up to 16v spec.

Cheers.

thats the best way yea, arm the system with a switch on the dash somewhere, then a microswitch under the pedal to give the kick when you're flooring it. jbs auto designs have successfully installed nitrous injection on several cars that i know of now (including a diesel) with great success, and more than 20,000 on the clock. ?6000 is a stupid figure, i think they quoted me ?1200 for a full kit with progressive controller and 6lb bottle - fitted.
same applies with any performance upgrade, if you have a weak part, its gonna break !
