Mk 3 install - I need a few pointers please.
« on: 30 January 2010, 11:47 »

Hi,

I have a Mk3 Golf and will be upgrading the ICE asap.  My usual builds are cabin speakers driven by a separate amp and capped off at around 80htz or 120htz depending on the driver size and then to fill the bottom end out with a sub.

I am not a bass monster and am looking for a full and rounded sound that will kick when one of my fave tracks comes along!

I have not worked on a Golf before so have the following questions:

1.  What size are the standard speakers and what are the maximum sizes that can be fitted to the front and rear doors without changing the factory look?  I am happy to fit larger drivers with an adapter or by making an MDF panel but I dont want to cut any metal or door coverings.

2.  Are there and cavaties/spaces recommended for installing amps?  Is there room under rear seats or behind dash etc or is it best to board the boot?

3.  Sub install. Normally, a 10" sub in a sealed enclosure and driven by a big amp provides me with all the bass I need. Its been many years since I have installed into a car with a parcel shelf so wonder if a smaller sub would still be heard ok?  Has anyone experimented with an 8" or 2x6" drivers in a sealed enclosure?

4.  Do the rear speakers offer anything or should they be disconnected?  My front speakers on their own sound clear with a good mid but the bass response is lacking.  The rears have a much poorer top end but give much more bass?

To the best of my knowledge they will be the original speakers - is this a Golf trait -that the rear drivers provide the bass - maybe they are bigger?

Cheers

They are 6.5's in the doors, 6.5 would be the max really without at least having to attack your door panel. TBH without fixing them to the metal of the door larger speakers will be a waste of money anyway.

2.  Are there and cavaties/spaces recommended for installing amps?  Is there room under rear seats or behind dash etc or is it best to board the boot?

not too sure, I drive a convertible, I have used the boot

A minimum 10 inch would be best unless you plan on spending mega money and have a real reason to only use an 8 ( for a wheel well build or similar)

Fade the rears out, any rear speakers at all will ruin the sound. In my convertable they have 6.5's both front and rear but I don't think the non cabbies do. Either way lose the rears, they will do the sound no favours at all.

:)

If you read the post I wrote above I edited your quote with replies to your questions.

If I did not write ''5chars'' or something else which is ''5 characters'' long (e.g 12345 or asdfg) below your quote then I cannot post the edited reply on its own. My message would be to short and the ''post'' button would not work.... in most cases anyway.

I hope it makes sense now.
