it does make you realise how expensive it is when see it in the flesh and drive it. What sort of pcp was they offering you? Off the top of my head they offered me on £31500 R £9450 deposit, 35 payments of £420 and future value/final value of 12.5k.

P.s ive never brought a car on pcp so no idea if it was any good but it seemed a bit expensive to me.

Similar to you. I would expect a GMFV after 3 years of at least 50% of purchase price on a car like that. Merc can do it on most their models. And they'll give you discount too.

I almost posted on this yesterday. I have been getting my figures in from my finance broker. I tend to have a couple of cars a year myself, plus buy the cars for my company, so end up doing a number of finance deals a year. . You will be very pushed to get 50% gmfv nowadays.  My Porsche that I bough 6 months ago at about 47%. I asked for figures on the Golf R, Scirocco, GTI and S3 yesterday.

What became clear is that some underwritters have yet to get to grips with the R. The GTI was given 12.7k after 3 years (£27.5k), the R 11.5k (32.5k). The Scirocco was similar to the R. The S3 13.5k (30.5k). All cars DSG and 10kmpa.

What I would really expect with the R is : £14,250 RV. If I put 9.5k down on a 31.5k car I would expect monthly payments to be: £350

VW finance tends to be very conservative on RV's.

Nah - just VW being stupidly conservative.

They were the same with the Mk5 R32 - the brand new one (DBP 5 door with DSG, Leather) I bought in November 2008 they offered a GMFV after 3 years of £7K. Well, as you probably know, a car like that is easily worth £15K.

Just but the Magazine "Car" (Spain), it has a 3 pages Review and they give 5/5 stars!. They are a little bit disappointed with the DSG saying that it does what ever it wants, not what you want to do, unless you put it in the manual mode. With the automatic mode - "D"- the car always tries to start in 2nd gear to safe Gas, this makes it a little bit slow.  I do really think that this is really strange after what I have been reading everywhere about the DSG, maybe it is a problem from that unit. Apart from all that, they say is the best golf ever. A lot faster than the R32 MKV, Stick to the road and very comfortable. It´s funny what they say.. For those who will say that it is a lot of money for a Golf compare to a Focus RS, just find a Ford, sit down, check the interior and you will find out how they saved all that money you are not spending. Next month they´ll do another review but in Spain without snow, and rain (it was done Germany). Oh and as the say at the end.. Finally there is a Golf R that puts Volkswagen in the place it should be, fixing what the others R32 did before, promising things they never did. With the new Golf R we found the perfect Golf, a GTI... with very BIGGER BALLS.

Remember they tested this car in the snow!!!!!. Not a good write up by the journo's, very misleading tbh.

My guess would be £16k max. All finance companies will need a buffer so £14.5k will be the max I think they will go for.

^^^yes agree thats 14.5k thats what they would pay you if you was px ing but buying one from Vw 17k+ easily. They sell 3 year old gti at 14-17k. Some price 4 and 5 year cars at 13-14k thats about 70% of original price robbin barstools. Possibly pick up a R 16k private sale 40k miles cloth,fairly basic spec in 3 years. Unless they do a mk5 r32 job  and just cut price dramatically.

You also have newer and newer cars putting out less and less co2. The R is not that low compared to others and it depends what goverment is in power how much this may effect cars in the future.
