Excellent review. Thanks for taking the time to write it. You write well. I am looking forward to comparing notes with you when I drive one. I agree with you about the Blue Graphite. This must be the worst possible colour for the R. Rising Blue or United Grey are so much better. (Racing Green is available from German dealers for €1,600 and I have to say I'm tempted to see if I can get it for mine.)

Car magazine described the GTI as the 911 of hot hatches. I think this is a brilliant description. No doubt that this is an amazingly capable car. For a lot of people, the grin factor a car provides comes feeling the rear end slip and catching it before you oversteer. It is difficult if not dangerous to really experience the best a good rear driver can offer on UK roads, but something like the R has a different grin factor. It is the sheer pace you can achieve, getting from A to B in complete safety at breakneck speeds. I had one of the first VR6s to come into the UK and it was amazing the number of bigger and more expensive cars it showed up. I am in no doubt that the Golf R is the same.  AWD with a FWD bias always gives you such confidence.

As I said in another post, I am itching to see what time the R goes round the 'Ring in. If it can do it in under 8 minutes 20 seconds, then all objections to the price disappear. In the meantime, the only grounds for slating this beast is cost.
Golf R - almost on order - 5-door, DSG, Rising Blue, leather, 19" alloys, RNS510 with Dynaudio, ACC, Sunroof, Parking camera and sensors, luxury pack and cruise control.

Well done mate! Very interesting reading.

Are you still happy you've got one on order now that you've seen it in the flesh and driven it?

Oh yes. Absolutely.

I was hoping the test drive would make the wait easier. But, if anything, it's made it worse.

I would agree with evo magazine - it's a 4.5/5 star car. :nerd:

it does make you realise how expensive it is when see it in the flesh and drive it. What sort of pcp was they offering you? Off the top of my head they offered me on £31500 R £9450 deposit, 35 payments of £420 and future value/final value of 12.5k.

P.s ive never brought a car on pcp so no idea if it was any good but it seemed a bit expensive to me.
GTI manual PP, now sold  :-(

Similar to you. I would expect a GMFV after 3 years of at least 50% of purchase price on a car like that. Merc can do it on most their models. And they'll give you discount too.
