Maybe should start a thread on this but the best I've seen on mine is about 41mpg, and that was downhill on the M8 when the traffic conditions were holding me to about 50mph.  It only held at that level for a few miles.

I'm averaging about 32mpg overall.  My daily work run is about 10 miles straight on an A road, no starts and stops, and I don't often get above about 32mpg.

I'll start a new thread, it's interesing.

Rolfe.

When I'm getting my good fuel consumption (45mpg+) I'm on the motorway usually sitting about 55-60 with the cruise control on. I find that the speed in the golf can creep up so quickly if you don't pay attention so I just set a speed and let it cruise. If I was to sit at 70 though I do notice that the mpg falls to the low 40's and high 30's.

Sitting at 55 though does get you some funny looks so I wouldn't advise it for all. Where I live the motorways are pretty good with 3 lanes so it's not too much hassle sitting on the inside taking it gently.

I did a 350 mile round trip last week and managed 45mpg. That was cruising at 70 for the most of the time.

Very impresssive.

My MarkV GT TDI 140bhp managed 50mpg for the same trip.

Forgot to add I only use Shell Optimax

Well the best I've had was 38mpg that was at a steady 60mph on a dual carriageway.

I am very pleased with it try and get those kind of figures out of a Focus ST or the like.

I've just been on some of the VXR owners forums and even they are finding that the cars are more economical than thought. Some of the boys in Astra VXR's are sitting at about 41mpg on long trips.

Although this is not as good as over 50mpg in the GTI, I find it very encouraging to see people with other makes are also being pleasantly surprised by their cars.

With all the pressure nowadays to save the planet, it's nice to know you don't have to buy a Prius to be economical. Again this is one of the reasons I would pick a GTI/ hot hatch over something like an Impreza or EVO as the more powerful cars are too thirsty IMO.

Sometimes it's often a case of 'our car is better than theirs' but I find it refreshing that we can all be happy.

OMG - that is downright lethal! Going too slowly on a motorway is as bad as going too fast.

Too many resons to list, but I'm too shocked to write properly.  And from a GTI driver as well...

Mk6 Golf GTI 5dr, DBP, Monza Shadow, Xenons, ACC, RCD510, Park Assist, Camera, Lux pack.... and now bluetooth.... and now DSG!

Roadrage alert. I hate it when trucks are having to overtake cars on the inside lane. Forcing all traffic into the outside lane.
