Automatic golf
« on: 15 January 2010, 10:09 »
Hi,
Does anyone have any experience of auto golfs mk3?  What are they like?
I have a mk3 8v gti, my wife had a accident this week in her auto mondeo, sadly it is now a write off.  She would still like another auto (not sure why!)

I have seen a really nice mk3 auto 1.8, and was wondering if they are worth the bother.

Many thanks

as long as she doesn't want a fast or particularly economical car then it's perfectly good.

I drive a 1999 2.0 auto cabriolet, we have no choice here as VW did not export any manual version of the cabriolet to this part of the world. apart from being slow and higher risk of gearbox trouble and higher fuel consumption, another problem if you do a lots of motorway driving is that the 4 speed ratio is quite annoying at high speed, 60mph will be in top gear 3000rpm this mean more engine noise and vribation felt at the drive seat, i remeber on most of the 5 speed manual cars 60mph will be aaround 2000rpm very quiet and claim.

i drive an automatic mk3 vr6..dude its embarassing i kno, but u know wat, they are fineee...u cant get a manual in this part of the world but if therez need for speed u down shift manually...and i dont think ur wife wud be racing other cars..a few problems i noticed in automatic gear boxes, and i aint very mechanical minded, mind u:

-fuel economy is not that great
-the pick up is slower than a manual ofcourse
- the gears seem to resist to ur need somtimes but they catch on shortly
- my gear computer( dunno the technical name) went bust twice, killing my 0-60 time..very slow acceleration..but was soon sorted
-the throttle on the car is trigger happy, so it gives a good work out to the automatic gearbox( but maybe i have a vr6, thats the reason)
-and i agree with saenbeer...though i love the torquey drive even at high speeds:p

and an 8v gti would still look the part!;)..u cant go wrong with a mk3..as in u cant stay wrong till u get it fixed;)..its a love affair, prepare to get jealous wen u wife starts to spend more time with the car than urself!:p

cheers
