mk3 golf gti clutch problems!!
« on: 13 January 2010, 22:43 »
Hi guys,
Ive just got given a golf gti with a completely screwed clutch which ive spent about 6 hours replacing tonight.
I put the clutch in exactly the way the old one came out (which was the original clutch) and took it for a drive, whilst driving normally its fine but if I give it some it slips really badly and when I take my foot off the accelerator its makes quite a bad noise from the gearbox/clutch area. Im not experienced in this at all so I dont know what to do basically, so any help would be great. By the way its a 2.0 8v if you needed to know this. Many thanks, Stuart.

Its usually best to change the cable at the same time. I changed my cable first and then the clutch started slipping so had to change the clutch as well. The cable is self adjusting and may be stretched too much for the new clutch. Worth changing this first. Easy enough to do....I did my own and had never done one before. Just be careful when buying as there are two different cables for the GTi. Take your chassis number with you and the parts supplier should be able to check. If you need advice on how to change it let me know.     Cheers     Deano

I don't think the cable would make it slip, might be worth a try I guess.

Just think it may be worth a try to cure the slipping problem....but not to sure about the noise from the gearbox/clutch. I just know when I changed my cable first it made my clutch slip. I was told by the clutch fitters that it is advisable to change the cable at the same time.

yeah cable should be changed too. It's self adjusting so as far as it knows the clutch is still worn. Change it, only a 10 minute job and it should cure the problem.

Takes longer than 10mins.
