MOT Failed on seized handbrake cable.

As i suspected i failed my MOT on a seized handbrake cable

I'm guessing water was getting into it.

The mechanic hasn't given me a price on the repair yet. But i just wondered how much does it normally cost to supply and fit a new cable?

I'd get the cable yourself from gsf or eurocarparts,to make sure they don't try rip you off,a cable won't be alot and then maybe an hours labour so your looking at under 100 quid I'd say.

The mechanic is a kind of friend, and normally gives me a discount so hopefully won't rip me off. I think he has the part ordered, so i'll see what happens.

are u handy with a spanner? if you take a look on Ben Lessani's project thread he does have a step by step guide on there about fitting one!

They're easy to replace so an experienced mechanic shouldn't take more than 30 minutes to replace it and get it adjusted properly.

mate just had his done 10 quid for the cable 30 quid fitting at a garage.

If you had waited a couple of days you would have known that the pass rate for a mk2 is 1/2..... then all would have been alright

The statistics have been released for MOT failure rates, MK2's are ~50% either way according to the stat's. Not bad for mostly 20+ year old cars

£100 would be a rip-off.  £30-£40 sounds about right to me...  £10 for the cable, then 30mins MAX labour for fitting.  Where a car-lift etc is available, should only take about 10-15 minutes to fit and adjust!
