the mk3 golf gti wont be a classic. someone said only people who knows about gti's say the mk3 was poor, the public think "its a golf gti". but the people who are goin to deem it a classic in the future are going to be the same enthusiast from today. so its will still be the "poor gti". only the vr6 will have any status in time. like cossy escort, a classic and always will be due to its limited numbers and how vastly different it is to any other escort family.
the mk1 one is classic because it was the original "hothatch", that's its status.
the mk2 did the hard job of being better than the original, that its status.
the mk3 was worse than its predecessors and is common as muck. don't see why anyone will rave about it years to come. i see far more run down "daily" mk3s gti's (especially 5 doors)  on the road that are just used and abused by tom, dick and harry. if it has that bad reputation now, how will it change years to come?
now id say every 3 out 5 mk2 gtis i see on the road are clean original looked after examples, or are modified. the mk3 gti almost as the same appeal as say mk2 driver or GL that isnt anything special.  that's its problem, and always will be. maybe the exception to the rule will be the 16v anniversary only due to its limited numbers.
vr6 will survive due it being completely different from a gti so doesn't have the gti's stigma, and having the new vr6 engine that no other golf had before it had, it has no competitor to be judged upon, therefor it gets the mk1 like status of being an original.

after my rant id just like to point out im not a mk3 hater as i own and like my mk3 gti anni, just sayin how i see it.  :nerd:

everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and to say the general public wont regard, say...a mk 3 GTI as a classic is lunacy...  everyone has heard the phrase "golf GTI" so that in its self is gonna help it make a classic status.

Not everyone is as closed minded as the people on the forums (which in reality is prob a tiny part of the popularity)

i am just basing it on my own exp, and that is wherever i go in the mk 3, i get people asking about it etc etc, its probably because i keep it looking clean and its old, not much younger than a late mk 2 (1993 to be exact)

theirs many run down mk 3 gtis out their, yes, that is for sure, we know it was marketed for sales more than anything, however these tatty examples will be off the road in no time = seeing many mk 3 gtis on the road in the future will not be as common sight

same as what happend with the mk 2, they used to be common as muck too. many people on here just wont remember that as they were too young or not even born.
if you had a 8v mk 2 back in the 90's all my mates would take the p1ss out of you (similar stuff as the mk 3 gets now - heavy and slow etc

a golf gti is a bit of a classic no matter what mk, yeah on the forums the 3 gets bad press, epecially on this forum,  iv had mk 2's, 3's and 4's, i love em all, theirs something similar about all golfs to me personally, and thats why i like them,  but thats just me. i will say out of all the ones iv had, the black mk 3 has been the better in terms of reliability.. maybe mine is just a good one if their is such a thing

in a nutshell, it will still be a classic, even if for the wrong reasons

hope this made sense ?

Nope it is a GL

Mk1 and Mk2's are will always be classics as such, I don't think Mk3 / 4 and 5 will head the same way, however VR6 and R32 may / will be different.

Mk3 will be a classic - especially the VR6. It was the only hatchback out there with a 6 cylinder engine.

I don't understand why the Mk3 gets such bad press. The Mk4 was the worst GTI IMO - and I mean the 1.8T, not the re-badged 2.0 Highline. Again the Mk4's which will be sought after classics will be the big-engined V5, V6 and R32.

The biggest problem with the mk3 was after the mk2 it was such a let down, standard susp. is very poor and with the weight performance was poor.

Lol at all the mk3 owners feeling the need to defend their car as being a potential classic.

Problem is alot of us hang out in sections where there is a mutual appreciation for our certain model of car so have a rose tinted view of the car (Mk3 gti owners looking at you, nah joke joke ;D)
