Try it, you might be surprised. I mean BTCC cars are FWD and they look a ball to drive.

Yep, silly to generalise!  My only track stuff has been in my Brother's old Lotus which is great and a Cooper S which was less great (although fast).

I've read stuff like 'Cos they couldn't afford the GTI

The GTD suited me more because the company car tax and fuel costs were lower so I could spend more on important stuff like family holidays etc - much more important to me than how much faster my car goes than its diesel equivalent.

So in other words.......for you it IS a money issue.....uhhhmmmmm....so if you could afford the price-difference in buying and driving it and still spend an equal amount of money on other stuff.... :smug:

if that was the case I'm sure he'd run a massive V8 instead of a 4 pot petrol.

Thought I'd just contribute a set of performance figures taken from Volkswagen Driver magazine:

               Mk6 GTI   Mk6 GTD   Mk6 GTI   Mk5 GTI   Mk5 ED30
               Manual   Manual      DSG         Manual      Manual
0-60         6.3         7.5            6.5            6.0         5.6
0-80         9.6         12.6         10.1            10.7      9.4
30-50 3rd   3.2         3.1            2.4            3.0         2.9
50-70 4th   4.3         4.7            --            4.1         3.7

overall mpg   35.2      46.7         32.5         28.6         27.8

I went from a Mark V GTI to an Audi TT and I can say the TT was quicker.
From the TT changed to a GTD and obviously the TT was quicker.
I would also say the mark V GTI was quicker than the GTD so I don't think
for one minute my GTD is quicker than a Mark VI GTI !!!!!
The GTD is still quick in the real world for me but the GTI has to be quicker.
I was undecided what to buy but having had a Mark V GTI engine explode on me at 8,000 miles I went for the understated GTD with vancouver alloys.

WHAT ????

So my new GTD that I`m getting wont be as fast as a GTI????

I DONT BELIIIEEEVE IT !!!!!!

Come on, its a diesel and looses 40 ponies to the petrol.
With a remap it may be different if the GTI isnt mapped, but it offered me the best of both worlds, pretty swift and great fuel consumption.
Like the man said, a few hundred quid when buying new is neither here nor there, I wanted the longevity of a diesel and the lower fuel bills, and
since I`m planning to keep it for 10 years plus, I`ll get plenty of benefit.

Good stuff.  I think the problem is that people read the 0-60 and think that's going to be repeated over several miles of track/road but the 30-50 and 50-70 times are closer to the probable result (multiplied number of corners).  Would be interesting (although probably very difficult) to see how much difference XDS makes - most of the difference between Mk5 and Mk6 on track?

But in windy roads you would beat a GTI ? pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease say yes.

I didn't say that.  I'm not one of the people suggesting the GTD is faster, what I am saying is that there isn't the huge gulf of difference some GTI owners are suggesting.

Given that the GTD can do 30-50 faster than the GTI then on windy roads it would be an incredibly close call, but no argument from me that overall the GTI is a faster car.

I didn't purchase the car, its a company expensed vehicle.  My outgoings are company car tax and personal fuel, both of which are cheaper than the GTI.  I can afford the GTI fuel costs and car tax no worries, I'd just rather spend the money elsewhere.

Such a shame that in a forum where I thought there were some clued up people that this had to be posted to show the clueless that the GTI is faster. What am i saying, the GTD is faster and I'm sticking to that, I've has such a laugh here in work with this I aint changing my mind now.
