Hello,

I am in the process of upgrading my ICE from standard. I have recently purchased a Nakamichi CD-400 HU and am wondering what component speakers might best compliment the system? I presume its best to upgrade front and rear, and with a total budget of £150(ish) need to keep it under £75 (ish) per pairing.

Vibe SEK60 6.5" going cheap in Halfords (I know this is not exactly high-end store or speakers)...Any thoughts/recommendations/offers?

Completely open to suggestion. I don't want to purchase a sub or any additional amplification quite yet, just a standard component setup which works great as an all-rounder for all music types... your thoughts would be very appreciated!

Cheers,

Andy

Well, perhaps this train of thought is going to be unpoular, but I think you're mad using a Nak head unit and then playing it through £75 vibe speakers. If you're going to use what are, albeit not bad but entry level speakers, why use a Nakamichi head unit? You may as well use an old JVC....

My suggestion would be ignore the rear speakers - disconnect them if necessary - and concentrate on getting a decent set of components up front, swiftly followed by some decent amplification.

Then get yourself a sub and amp to add some decent depth to the music and filter off the sub-bass from the fronts, which in turn will allow you to drive them even harder.

Absolutely the last thing I would do is spend money on rear speakers....

X222 ;)

I would be inclined to take this further in fact and say I would amp the standards before looking at running comps from your HU. Don't get me wrong, the Nak will be a good unit but almost any aftermarket speakers ( comps especially) will not run well from little amounts of power.
There are exceptions, some can be run perfectly well from HU power but they tend to be more of a compromise and better can be achieved with an amp and 'normal' set of comps.

The costs/effort vs gains of going down the amp+comp route will be worth it IMO when compared to the cost vs sound achieved with low powered comps running from HU.

Thanks both for the replies, I thought I was probably a little ambitious with the Vibes! Would definitly like to do it right so will opt for a single pair of components first (disconnecting the rears), then follow with an amp asap (although understand the amp first approach too, just need to control costs a little and speakers seem like a logical first step.)

I would therefore really appreciate any recommendations for component speakers for £150-200..any ideas? There must be some good sales out there somewhere..:) Is it worth keeping with the Nakamichi theme?..

http://www.nakamichi.com/pfv/ICE/CSpk/sps2_650.htm - £125 minimum on Ebay...

Thanks again for the responses, super helpful!

finally these V V are excellent if you add another £20 onto the top of your budget.

just remember to check the depth of the speakers as mk3s do not have all the room in the world to play with.

as said though, don't expect too much when running from the HU, when you get an amp any of the above speakers will come to life nicely.

^^^ This guy knows his stuff. Couldn't have picked better myself.

Heed Tommycabs words, if you are going down the high-powered component route (which is absolutely the right way to go) do not leave it too long before you connect a decent amplifier capable of delivering a solid 50wrms. It is just as easy to kill a speaker by underpowering it as it is overpowering it.

Great advice chaps. Have ordered the Genesis Profile 16's per your recommendation. Will now save the pennies for an amp in the next few months. Will probably opt for a Genesis too. Thanks again for the advice, really helpful...Cheers, Andy.

They seemed to get some good feedback on talkaudio along with a few other sites/forums, Plus, an audiophile in the 'real' world also recommended. Oh, plus I am THE most impatient person ever.

Not exactly a sound test I realise but good enough for me. Will update this post with some honest feedback once the installation is complete and Buble has had his wicked way with them. ;)

Thanks again y'all!
