When i was getting the same problem with mine start with the basics.  You might need a mate to help, remove a spark plug and clamp it to a bare metal part of the engine (with ht lead attached) and start cranking the engine.  It should be sparking.  If not theres where you start.

Next one checks fuels getting to it, it would suck if you were out of petrol lol.  Remove the fuel line (the one with an arrow pointing towards the injectors) put it in a large jug. Again i recommend using a friend, turn ignition on and it should pump fuel into the jug, if not crank it for a sec MAKE SURE YOUR SPARK PLUG IS PUT BACK IN BEFORE YOU TRY

Oh check the crank possition sensor is connected, it wont spark without it

hi mate, it has half tank of fuel, spark is there you can smell the fuel too, we didnt remove anything apart from the timming belt. either the pillock who put the timming belt on did it wrong and smashed the valves or the distriputor pulley is not lined up. need to check the timming. im thinking the ECU has gone into safe mode or the crank sensors have cut in.

I would also say new engine, there not so bad on price
but i do know a very good place to get your parts from!
http://www.vwspares.co.uk/
I'd say give them a ring instead of online, think the guys name was andy and when we did our first engine rebuild he helped us out no end, also cost way less then elsewhere!
I'll talk these guys up no end since made our lives so easy
