Could it be the pulleys??
« on: 04 January 2010, 14:30 »
hi lads,

hope everyone enjoyed their xmas and the new year. Happy new year to everyone & i wish this year brings happiness and joys to your lifes.

anyway getting bit carried away there

Right, to the point now, i have a mk3 gti 8v, AGG engine code. for the past few days ive noticed a knocking noise comming from the cam belt side, i cant explain it properly but it sounds like somethings loose, anyway took it to a mate of mine who said that it could be 3 things,

1. engine fooked (VR6 replacement)
2. pulleys might need replacing
3. water pump

i know the water pump is fine, but like an idiot i didnt know that it had to be replaced when fitting new timming kit,
the timming kit was replaced at 86k now the engine has 118k on it.
the noise is like a very faint cloncking noise, its muffled with a waterish noise, its noticable even when on idle.

now people i have seen some lightweight pulleys on the bay http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=golf+gti+mk3+pulley&_sacat=See-All-Categories i dont know $hit about the pulleys they state that it increases performance, you know what people are like. i need more info on these as if they are worth it or not. and please dont take the pee

also any info on the engine noise would be a great advantage.

thanks in advance

sharki

waterpump isnt part of the timing belt service, you're thinking of smallblock engines. it could still be bust even tho it works ok, they have a bearing in them which can go.

take each belt off 1 at a time and fire the engine, see if the noise goes. Dont run the car for long with the alternator belt off for obvious reasons!  If the noise stops, you know the problem is on something driven by a belt, if not problem is elsewhere.  if its on a belt driven device spin each by hand and wobble the pullies, any grinding or play and you have likely found the suspect.

if the problem doesnt go it could be the tensioner, or the timing belt is rubbing on one of the covers.  check all the covers were fitted correctly after the service, in particular there is a T bolt that goes thru the front of the waterpump and secures the front of the lower belt cover down with a nut.

buying a lightweight crank pulley wont make any difference to the noise, it has no bearings in it.

hi people,

found out it was the waterpump (bearings inside it were gone), fitted it in and put it back to gether, had to take the timming belt of as it was in the way, so anyway lined the timming belt up before i took it off, anyway fited it all back up lined it up and everything, now i tried to start it up but it wouldnt fire up just kept turning till battery was flat, thought it may be the distriputor messed with that no luck, top end and bottom end line up also the disp, started it again no luck just keeps turning doesnt fire up, this was done without any of the belts on part from the timming belt. could anyone shine some light? as it started up without the belts on just the timming belt, now it wont budge.

thank you so much
