Brilliant! After an hour & a half mammoth session tonight (and 40 emails spread over 6 weeks!) I've got most of my money back on the beemer.

Tomorrow i'll have cash in the bank for a new car.

Trouble is i'm still undecided. My ideal option is a golf R, but it's just too much. 5/6k more than a gti and £15k more than an R32

So failing that it was R32 + something big for when we (probably) have a 2nd child - i thought the wife was ok(ish) with that plan but now saying i'm being stupid.

so how do i find one car which fits the bill? the beemer was ok, but they had fckd up the leather retrim for the 3rd time, and i was getting around 28mpg (its meant to do 42) (yes my right foot is made of lead, and it was probably more the diesel sound i didn't like, or i'd have let them fix it!)

so- how bad is a GTI DSG in the snow vs R32? the BM was undriveable, even in light slush. if i did go R32 I'm worried i'd but disappointed by the older interior- the mk6's look great with the touchscreen & rearview cam, plus the exterior is NICE.

(i'm more worried i'm trying to talk myself into parting with £36k for an R) - although at least the wife would probably think it was less than 27?
Just sold an S5 - previously mkV R32 DSG Metallic Grey with RNS 510 (thanks to MortyGT140)

Golfs better in the snow, Huge massive wide tyres and RWD just don't work especially with that amount of torque. But if you really want the golf to work then get winter tyres, makes a huge difference.
R32 in snow, it imo is all down to tyres and learning to drive in such conditions. Saying that i did have a bit play with a mates octavia TDI haldex 4WD in the snow and it was not that bad.
MPG will be no better in any of the cars you have listed, infact worse i would expect.
40 emails you say, I know what thats like!
If you want the R you will always regret not getting it imo, there will always be a moment, when you say i wish..., more than likley at a junction when you spin the front wheels of the GTI trying for a quick jump into traffic.

If you want a fast estate car, and don't mind second hand, how about an RS4 avant?  Awesome motor, shame my wife won't drive it cos its too big!  Perfect all round car otherwise

Mk6 Golf GTI 5dr, DBP, Monza Shadow, Xenons, ACC, RCD510, Park Assist, Camera, Lux pack.... and now bluetooth.... and now DSG!

Why don't you save some money and go for a GTD, its faster than a GTI.

GTI mk6, 3dr Manual (Yes Manual! If I wanted a Taxi I'd hail one, not spend £1500 on one), Candy White, Full Leather, Xenons, ACC, 18", RCD510 + Dynaudio, DAB Radio, Winter Pack, Luxury Pack, Fiscon Bluetooth Plus, Golf R LED's.

R32 is great in snow.. never had any problems with mine.

My comments that the MK5 drives the same as the MK6 stands for 90% of driving. Its only when the mk6 is really pushed does it feel slightly tighter and more focused.

I found the Mk5 and Mk6 drove very similar (had a couple of long test drives, as kept changing mind about ACC, so probably added up to about 1.5 days as got some long runs in on B roads and motorways). Bought a new car as needed a 5 door as the tilt\slide seats in the 3 door keep breaking which is pants if you've got kids).

Interesting you say this as started to noticed that a few of the people who live by us have current shape 3 series.

The golf mk5 GTI was fine in the snow, even without winter tyers. The traction control etc where excellent. Only problem was not with the car, but when taking my time on the ice, had several tossers who were driving 4X4s tailgateing. On way home the other week driving through a residential estate taking it very easy as was sliding everywhere on the uneaven ice, when had one idiot in his mitsubishi 4x4 truck driving about a 1meter off the back. I badly I wanted to get out and and do a drill instructor on him (especially as I had a 2 year old in the back grrr), but I was starting to loose it so much I know I would have ended up seriously lamping him if he'd try to justify driving like an idiot (and was so dumb he didn't bother trying to overtake even when I was pulled over to the left on a wide residental road, guess he just wanted to be a tosser in his big truck).

Tongue firmly in cheek, Kev?

S4/RS4 would be my first choice for baby-lugging duties... Just don't mention the running costs!

MKV GTI | Reflex Silver | 5-dr | Anthracite 17" | Manual | Highline MFD | Cruise | Revision 'D' DV | Dirty Pipes |

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

That's the sh!t I'm being fed in another thread, so it must be true. The GTD is faster than a GTI.
