Winter wheels for the GTI are listed as 6 J x 16 205/55 R 16 on the German configurator. I picked up a brand new set of 17" VW Exis wheels the other day. Just need to save up for the winter tyres now!

so wanted them on the wheel rack ready to go before the snow comes and the tyre places run out (like they did last year!)

Was there a problem getting hold of them last winter? I was hoping to hold on until late October before buying

Winter wheels for a Golf R from VW are listed as optinal extras in other countrys are as follows

Alloys "Meribel" 6 J x 17 with 205/50 R 17 tyres.

I'm surprised 17s will go over the R's brakes - but there you go.

I would probably have gone for 17s for winter, for my own car, but I have my eye on some bigger brakes and they need 18s to clear...and I'm sure as hell not changing brakes and wheels every winter!

18s will be just fine, as long as the compound is correct...just not offering as much protection for the rim as a 17 (smaller sidewalls and all that...) should you slide on ice and thump one. I covered that eventuality by having a 'hot standby':

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.

It's 16s my old man runs on his Golf in winter...6.5" x 16" I think, but with 205/55/16 Avon Ice Touring tyres.
Back on the OEM 17s in summer.

There was by the time the snow hit hard...you should be OK in October, but by Jan/Feb when people had been stuck for days and then decided to buy winter tyres - none left!

There is a chap on the R Forum has actually specced his car with 17" Winter Wheels in Iceland (I think!)

Was in the dealers this morning and noticed they had about a dozen different alloys mostly priced at £99 with a couple at £89.
This included Monzas and semi Monza Shadows (wasn't quite black in the holes but more like dark grey).
They also had the R wheels for this price.
All were replicas but I thought this was a good deal.
£549 for a set of 4 with tyres.

Would the dealers sell dodgy unapproved replicas?

most replicas will be ok.... that is until you need them to perform the most

A guy posted a picture of his reps a while back, he had hit a pothole and it had badly warped the wheel. Very dangerous imo. You get what you pay for.... dont see why you would pay £20+k for a GTI then skimp £300 per wheel :lipsrsealed:

I can only think the alloys are an old back log of stock. I wouldn't imagine the alloys are rep's but who know's with dealers these days.

It sounds like a great deal though (one which I never seem to stumble upon down my way ). What other alloys did they have out of interest. Did they have any 18" black detroit monza's for sale?
