^^^^^ I believe they are the OEM 19"s from a phaeton

Funny you should say that Stevie P, just after I posted the above I walked down to Sainsbury's to get some bread rolls and what should go past but a Phaeton wearing those style rims. Not only have I not seen a Phaeton for ages but I can't say I've ever took much notice of what wheels they run on (apart from Helios' anyway  )

They look a little bit too 'flat-faced' to be the 9x19 Phaeton wheel - might be the 8x19 optional on the Passat R36.
Now we're really getting into anorak territory   :nerd:

Can I throw this pic in the mix... pic taken off an american site (as you can see from the background).

18" or 19's I wonder.

I'd love to find some reps of these in the black. Black wheels suit a white gti

Maw, Look like those 18's I just bought (or genuine OEM's) painted black. Not sure I like the rim lip though as they make the wheel look smaller than if it was all black.

A mate of mine just got a white GTD with black 18's as a company car and it does look very sweet....

Black rims do look great on white or red cars. Inchcape have a couple of GTIs with black Monzas/Detroits, one in white and one in red on their used car website, they both look good. I was never that happy with the black wheels on my silver car. If I don't sell them I may give them another go later in the year.
The R Tallywhatsits do look good on the GTI/D in black. Maybe that's an option for you for winter use gossa?

the first silver gti with the omanyt's looks fantastics. very oem yet stylish too

They look really good.  I feel a bit sorry for the guy though, as his suspension seems to have collapsed!!

I'm looking for a cheap set of 18's to put winter tyres on for later in the year.  Not sure what to get, or what size of tyres I'll need?

225s will be fine as long as they are proper winter compound.

You could get away with 205 or 215s on a narrower rim...but where do you get a 6.5" or 7" wide 18" wheel?
And at 17" you will run into brake clearance problems.

I'm running 225/40/18 Verdestein Wintrac Extremes on some anthracise powder-coated 8" x 18" BBS CH for winter.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....

Cheers... I'll have a look into it soon, as I want to get them before the winter comes back!

Those must be brand new, never been used tyres - as they're still 'hairy'

My other problem is finding a decent set of 18's at a reasonable price that fir properly.
How much were those tyres out of interest?

All new...
Around £640 the full set, fitted.

None of that lot have seen a car yet...I just wasn't getting caught out by the weather, so wanted them on the wheel rack ready to go before the snow comes and the tyre places run out (like they did last year!)

I had Pirelli SnowSports on the vRS last winter and they were epic!
I was going places silly 4x4s couldn't go.
