okie dokie... Car mechanics in the snow!!

Lined up the OT marks to get the engine to TDC and the rotor arm seems to be about 15 degrees out to the right of the mark.

the entire dizzy inside looks rotten (some oxidisation on the metal parts)I  removed the bolt at the bottom to try to adjust the timing to see if it would make a difference but the enitre thing will not budge, Didnt want to put too much force on it and cause any damage, but I take it the whole unit has to come out and be moved round one tooth?

It does appear to be jammed solid to the block!

Any advice much appreciated!

yep thats a fixed one, you'll have to loosen the belt and move the intermediate shaft round to line rotor up with that notch. looks like the last guy who did your timing belt did it wrong!

you can just about pop the shaft round a tooth at a time if you remove the front nut that holds the belt cover on, but it can be a struggle.

also well worth taking out the flywheel inspection bung on top of the gearbox, use the mark on the fly wheel instead.  It needs to be loosened, has a large hex in the middle. I've not found anything large enough yet, so I tap em rounds with a hammer & drift.  Reason I say this, is because on the last MK3 2.0 8v I timed up the crank pulley mark was near 45 degrees off!

Thanks for that info rubjonny!

Last retarded question from me... which shaft is the intermediate shaft?

Is that the second pulley down opposite the tensioner?

yes

what are you lineing the dizzy up to?

>also well worth taking out the flywheel inspection bung on top of the gearbox
+1.  Don't bother with the crank markers - not accurate enough

James
You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

thanks for all you help with this, I got rather naffed off with it and called a mobile mechanic out for a second oppinion to mine!

He thinks its the coil pack, As the spark is not strong enough but is regular.

I did change this on the 2nd September so its managed to eat one in 3 months

Anyway, £30 lighter for his time and Iv ordered the part... lets see if it was that simple!!
