not had real problems with the golf but been borrowing my brothers corsa this wknd + the locks were always frozenanswer: get a lighter+ heat up the metal key, if it doesnt work straight away, put the key half in the lock+ then heat the part left sticking out to transfer heat to the lock barrel, your in within secondsnot quite so helpful for non smokers though

Had the door card off today and covered it in WD40, not convinced it will work but a matter off elimination!Also diping your key into water before trying the barrel is surely going to make it worse in the long run as the moisture may linger there and freeze on another day, especially as the weather is staying cold it wont evaporate.
