Windscreen froozen on the INSIDE?????
« on: 16 December 2009, 07:58 »
Hey people

Now it’s become cold at 6.30 in the morning, I half expect scrapping ice from the windows of my GTI, but not from the inside surely? The temp was showing -4 which when you look at it aint as cold as it’s gonna get this winter.

I have never really experienced this in any of my past cars (Vauxhall Corsa, Citroen Saxo, New Suzuki Swift) I think I got a slight frost on the old Corsa's windscreen when it was proper cold, but not at -4.

The icy patch on the inside was mainly at the very top of the windscreen, and I just wanted to know if this is a common thing or if there is a more serious problem a-foot?? Maybe its me and where I whack on the heated seats and the heating to full blast, maybe I'm building up some condensation or something before I get home, park her up, turn her off and tuck her in for the night? (The car I mean)

Any suggestions???

Has your car ever had its windscreen replaced?

The windscreen on my old golf was replaced and they didnt seal / set it properly.

It used to steam up loads more

My wife's 2006 corsa does this.

I reckon it's because she's got a habit of driving with the blowers off so the car get's condensation/damp build up inside. She also does short journeys so it never gets up to temp.

Personally I like things nice and warm which stops the car from getting damp inside in the winter.

Why don't you dry running the car with the A/C on during the winter? You should run it regularly to stop the compressor seizing up anyway, and also the A/C will remove moisture from the car and aid de-misting.

If you have the car red hot on the drive home & then park up outside i would say it's a good chance that condensation builds up & then freezes up over night.Keep the inside of the screen very clean as this helps. And as above use the air con as well.

Ok I may sound like a right plum here, but I have the duel climate control, so how do I go about getting the AC but keeping the temp hi as there is no dedicated AC button???? In the Swift I had before I could put the temp up to high then hit the AC button and it would greatly help with demisting the car and the such. But in the GTI as I have the duel climate control the way I keep cool is turn the climate control down to low. So if thats the only way to turn the AC on then it would be like sitting in a freezer.

Im not exactly sure what your asking here?

Without trying to teach you how to suck eggs the climate control works by controlling the temperature inside the car, think of it as Climate Control rather than AC. Just increase the temp to the one you want and hot air will blow out and try to maintain the selected temperature (without the need for you to turn it on or off, it will adjust fan speed and level of heat accordingly on its own).

Depending on what year your GTI is you will either have an AC or an ECON button. This basically disabled or enabled the AC which will give you a cooling effect (light ON means its switched OFF just to make things simple . . . ). Id leave it switched off (light ON) as you don't need cooling at this time of year.

Does that clear anything up?

WTF?  On = off, off = on!  Some engineer that was made redundant at VW had fun programming that logic!

If all fails with climate there's always the Ace Ventura, head-out-of-window method.

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

lol I know tell me about it.

Having it switched ON means that the AC is turned OFF i.e the default setting is to have AC ON (with me? lol)

BTW this is for my car which has the ECON button (the logic behind it is it means "Economy" so by having it ON your being economic and having the AC OFF thus saving fuel). I can not confirm that its the same with the newer ones which have the AC button, its a pretty safe bet it is thought and all they did was replace the button.
