Yeah I agree you get what you pay for although I have a Pioneer head unit I bought in 2003 and it's been in 5 cars and still works fine, best £150 head unit I've ever bought!

alpine green displays work well with the dash lighting, the older ones might be worth looking at

yeah, the £+300 I was on about which I have got and it has lasted is a Pioneer, I did have a pioneer back in '99 I think but it got nicked about 3 weeks into having it so I could never really judge that one.

another blinding unit which I know loads of people have had, its very reliable, very cheap and it has green illumination is very similar to this one, I can't find an exact pic, the one I mean is pretty old.

chances of getting one nowadays is next to none though, short of getting one through ebay.

EDIT:

here is the one i was on about

I can't even find any decent pictures of one so getting hold of one may prove tricky.

What about an old Alpine - the ones you where you pull and remove the whole unit?

I've just removed my Nak CD45z from my mk2.

I bought an absolututly mint Kenwood RDS Radio Cassette and changer combo cira 1994 from ebay for £38.00 for my 1990 Mk2.

Not original I know, but it would have been a period upgrade mod. Also I just had to have a cassette player, as that's how we used to play our music back in the day.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.
