Back on topic....

Mine rumbled like a pig when the tyres were worn out. Got the garage to check the wheel bearings but they were fine. Now whisper quiet with GY assymetrics. Tempted by the Vredesteins, but they were under £10 cheaper.

Interested in the cambelt/tensioner being the cause of the diesel noise. Is this correct? I've got a BWA engine (the newer one?) but it still sounds like an oil burner on idle.

Another thing I noticed today is that my engine on idle is really clunky and sounds like a diesel. Any ideas what might be causing that?

............no they don't.Is it an 05 with the AXX engine code by any chance ?.If it is do a search on here for '' my gti sounds like a diesel''. Mine was doing the same,worse when warmed up to temp.Turns out it's the small cam chain & tensioner,right hand side of the engine & ''yes'' there is a cam belt as well. I managed to get mine changed under a warranty i got with the car,sounds perfect now.

Clearly they do, even yours did 

i had the same as gene, its the cam belt. had mine fixed nearly a year ago i think, sounds like it should/ did as new now

Are you saying if you replace the cambelt it stops sounding like a derv?

........no mate just changing the belt won't stop the noise.As i posted earlier you need the small cam chain & tensioner replacing.It's the chain that wears & thats what is causing the rattle.

yep if you get the "belt"changed through VW they will automatically change all the connecting parts, so its not just one piece but a few that need doing which is why i was glad i got mine done under warranty or it could have been very expensive!

but back to tyres, PZero Nero's rule and i dont care what T_T says with his invisible A4 drivers crashing because they stick like glue in the wet, not so much in the dry though according to phil mc'arse who almost pooped himself the other day but i told him your in safe hands!!

There is a bit of confusion over the belt / chain.

On the left hand side (facing the front of the car) there is the timing belt which should be changed along with the tensioners etc (and ideally the water pump) as specified by VW.  Ie it is a service item.

Internal to the engine on the right hand side there is a CHAIN, which should be a lifetime item and is not a normal service item.  It seems these are prone to getting slack and making more noise than they should aka the loud diesel type noise.

Not to be confused with the mk6 engine which has a chain instead of a belt on the left hand side.

However, a perfectly healthy FSI engine will sound a bit diesely due to the high pressure fuel pump and injectors and this is perfectly normal.  It would be nice to hear a sound clip of an engine with a dodgy chain to differentiate as its normal for them to sound a bit rough at idle which doesn't help anyone trying to figure out if theirs is OK or not.  I'm guessing the ones with a dodgy chain are really noisy and pretty obvious that somethings not right

Just wanted to say thanks for all the helpful comments.

Anyway I took the GTI to a guy called Dan Taber, in Bexleyheath, he was a VAG specialist for years, then started up his own business. I found out about him via the “good guys” section on the forum. Just to add he was brilliant, he stopped what he was doing, had a listen to my engine, checked some stuff over and all for free. He knew what he was talking about and was really friendly, highly recommended by me! Anyway he said he highly doubted I had any problems, and that all sounded normal, but to come back if the noise got worse and he would do a more extensive check. So I drove away a very happy GTI owner.

.............you are spot on with these comments.It was the chain on the right hand side that was really slack on the drive gears/wheels hence the rattle.As you point out you do get a slight noise on idle due to the high pressure fuel pump but this should not sound like diesel rattle which mine did.
Mine was starting to sound so bad that even the wife who knows f**k all about cars said'' that dosn't sound right''. I think it's the early ones that have the problem ?.Mine is on an 05 plate with the AXX engine code.
