Thanks - these are the bits I'm interested in

Performance/Handling Modifications
Forge Diverter valve.
EVOMS intake
Autotech fuel pump.
REVO Stage 2+ (3 for the US guys!)
Milltek full turbo-back exhaust.
Forge Intercooler.

I'm just researching potential mods for the new toy I'm getting next year. You mention a custom remap in your build thread, but are there any other mods? I was reading Volkswagen Driver mag featured a APR-tuned Ed30 with 330bhp. Seems like a similar spec but without the larger intercooler and modified intake.

I've had APR, Custom-Code and REVO ECU software on my car and by far and away the best for me is the REVO. With the SPS+ controller it allows you to alter the Boost, fuelling and timing of the car within certain guidelines and hence make the best of your car's performance. Custom-Code was a very smooth progressive map, but ultimately didn't give the power or the flexibility I was after. APR was the first map I put on the car and to be honest it wasn't giving the figures I wanted at the time - other cars seemed to be making more power and were faster with the same hardware added!!! I've heard good things about Bluefin, but again it doesn't give you the flexibility that REVO does and on most of the RR's I've been on REVO comes out on top in the big bhp willy waving  GIAC is another well known tuner and my local tuner is a GIAC dealer and swears by it. I bought my GIAC DSG software from them, but am awaiting an update as certain functions aren't working on it (the map is still better than stock, but not at the level I want). There are a couple of smaller less known tuners like R-tech and Shark Performance, but I can't really give a true comment as I haven't had any dealings with them.

An ED30 with 330bhp will be a solid performer, but power can be had elsewhere and probably just as reliably. It all depends on how far you want to modify your car. Look at me, I only wanted a forum sticker when I joined here

My personal recommendation would be:-

Revision D OEM diverter valve - works just as well as the Forge and is £100 cheaper.
Cone style intake - there are many on the market and the one I'd lean towards would be my EVOM's - why? - No MAF or other faults coming up and it gives good gains.
Autotech fuel pump - well, really it is just uprated internals for the OEM pump, but it is much cheaper than the APR pump and from what I've seen, gives slightly better gains.
APR full 3" turbo-back exhaust - It doesn't give any extra gains over the Milltek or Blueflame, but it sounds absolutely gorgeous. If you want quieter, then have the Milltek resonated TBE.
The intercooler is interesting, personally I would always recommend a front mounted intercooler, but the ED30 theoretically had a "mounted behind the radiator" intercooler. The solution is to either go bigger and stick with the OEM location - in which case I would recommend the THS intercooler, or you go for a dual intercooler set-up - in which case I would recommend a Forge Twintercooler. Both give good gains and the cost to buy and fit is similar.
ECU remap - Well I'd have to say REVO.

Remember though, modifying a car is all about balance. You will find that as you give the car more power it will unsettle the suspension and the braking limitations begin to show.

It is properly scary how fast a tuned ED30 can put speed on and even more scary is how suddenly you realise that the next corner is coming up too fast, at which point you need the brakes and suspension.
I'd rather have uprated brakes and suspension and not need them, than not have them and need them

Very impressive Hurdy. Good point you make above about brakes and suspension. My nephew runs his own tuning company specifically for the japanese tuning scene (evo's, scoobys, supras, etc). He said it's surprising how many cars he gets in that have been tuned to hell with massive BHP figures but still on stock brakes and suspension. One guy in particular has a Mazda 323 Turbo 4x4 about 15-20 years old, but in mint condition. He had spent a kings ransom on the engine which was now producing about 330bhp (standard was about 150bhp). It was still on the stock brakes, and these apparently were a very iffy on the standard model anyway!

Couldn't agree more - that's where I always start when uprating a car's performance. In real-world driving, you get more from a good chassis set-up than most people think. My upgrade path usually goes like this:

1. suspension,
2. tyres and wheels,
3. brakes, ready now for...
4. engine

I'd think the larger intercooler is key to allowing the most from the K04 - do you know what boost pressure are you running?

Hi Mac,

I'm running a peak boost of just over 1.6bar, which drops back to around 1.55bar all the way to 6k rpm, where it tails off to 1.3bar by the redline upshift point.

Awesome power, Hurdy, although what's it like to put that through the front wheels?

Thanks for the wee product review ditty in one of your posts above - it's sorted my mods list for the next few months!

Keep the developments coming :afro:
MKV GTI | Reflex Silver | 5-dr | Anthracite 17" | Manual | Highline MFD | Cruise | Revision 'D' DV | Dirty Pipes |

The GTD is like a blow up doll. The GTI is like a proper woman. Sure the doll might last longer, and the woman might have higher running costs, but which would you rather have?

I'm used to metering my right foot to suit the conditions

It had no problem getting around the 'ring in just over 9 minutes.....in the wet.....on semi slicks.....with 2 x 15 stone+ men in

As for the mini product review....anyone can ask me anything they want on most modification products and I'll be able to either answer it or find an answer

The developments will keep coming.....the Quaife ATB Limited slip differential for my DSG is being fitted this week alongside full VF mounts for the transmission and engine. Can't wait to try out the Quaife

Hurdy, any tips on what to log? Would you say boost 9 is the best setting for tuned KO4's?

Hi Micky,

Boost 9 or 8 and sometimes 7 are what most people tend to run using a K04 and REVO. Boost 9 can sometimes knock a little off the peak power, but overall it will feel the most powerful on the road.

Specifically I would always refer you to the REVO PDF file for setting up your car in any state of tune. Messing about with the REVO settings should be done in conjunction with logging runs on VAG-COM/VCDS to ensure the engine is running within the recognised parameters.

Boost 9 could actually reduce the lifespan of the turbo, but even on a K04 it still runs at about 0.14bar below the maximum the ECU can deal with on max boost setting.
