7 year old 911 turbo or new GTI?
« on: 17 November 2009, 18:15 »
The Doc was showing off his polished-up car, a 2002 911 turbo in blue over on the Mk5 section.
I commented that they sell for about £28,000, about the same price a well specified Mk6 GTI.

Which would you rather have?
(GTI for me any day, no room for the dog)

I'd have the 911...as long as I can also have a family car and a motorbike.

GTI - the 996 is the ugliest 911 and the running costs are ridiculous.

I mucked about with the idea of a 6 yr old low milage 911 (996) C4S convertible tiptronic - already in my family - very well maintained - still chose the gti mark 6 - makes more sense on so many levels

i think the interior is a bit dated but cant argue with that.  think of what it cost(911) only 7 yrs ago- so its a bargain.  not v practical though.  i myself would prefer a 997 and u could get one for 35 grand.  911 is a 911- no questions about it.  i recently saw a 2003 gt3 for 34 grand- sold but great car.  at the end of the day a golf costs 23+grand and a 911 turbo is 100 grand!!
have a 911 if you got something else more practical.  or if you're single and young.

i dont think people buying a 911 are  concerned with the petrol costs.  911 aint all about the look, its more than that.  its even more of an icon than a gti.

I don't think 911 is that bad looking esp. the current one. I always wanted one and this is mine! I am over the moon when I manage to buy one at last! A Gen 2 997 Carrera C2S

Its is more practical than most other 2+2 coupe and the rear visibilty is better than some hothatch. Mine can do 30mpg The rear seat can seat two under 7s easily. (Im only 5'9) It is easy to park and drive. They don't date as badly as other cars cause like a Golf GTI, each new model change very little on the outside!
You do need the 4wd version if you intend to use it on a daily basis.

A 996 Turbo is quite robust and they are more reliable than most other supercars of that age group. Fuel consumption is not too bad. Servicing cost is less than a grand. However, if anything mechanical go wrong, the cost can shock you!
I personally will buy a mk6 GTI and wait for a few years for the new Gen 2 997 turbo price to come down!
0-60 3.4s 0-100mph 7s and can still do 25mpg! Staggering! http://www.youtube.com/user/autocar#p/u/5/ZHAkQ1s129w
